SUMMARY:Homeschool Bark & Birds
DESCRIPTION:Join a naturalist for a bark ID lesson\, designed for homeschoolers and a guardian. In the wintertime\, trees without their leaves can be very intimidating for identification! Knowing trees by their bark is an excellent way to refine your identification skills and develop a greater sense of place in nature. During our lesson\, we will learn tips & tricks for tree ID and we will focus on color\, texture\, and characteristic pattern differences that will help you learn your trees in their dormant state. Binoculars will be provided to look at bark and birds as we find them and participants will be given a tree ID handout to foster continued learning. Content covered during this lesson & hike is best suited for children 10-14. We encourage homeschoolers to attend due to the time of this program. DESCRIPTION:Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalists Aidan Rominger and Frank Brown on Tuesday November 19th\, from 10:30am-12:30pm on a birding hike around the bird sanctuary in search of winter bird species within the park! We will target a variety of waterfowl\, sparrows\, finches and more! This is a great opportunity for beginner birders to get hands on identification experience in the field with a skilled naturalist and experienced birder! The majority of the program will be hiking so dress accordingly for the colder weather. Feel free to pack a lunch as we will end the day inside the Ornithology Center classroom eating lunch together. SUMMARY:Gardening for Birds: Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 8\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Ornithology Center (OC) to learn how to prepare native plant seeds in the fall for germination over the winter\, to support wildlife\, especially birds! Join for a brief presentation followed by a garden tour\, then practice separating pre-collected seeds & build two germination containers\, one for the center and one for you to take home! Containers created by participants for the OC will be planted in the wildlife gardens in the spring. Participants can take home a seed container of their own as well to observe the final stages of germination and to plant at their own homes! \nAll materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a clean plastic container (think plastic milk jug\, gallon or half or 2L soda bottle) to utilize in the workshop. Preregistration is required\, $15/participant. This program is geared towards adults with an interest in gardening with native plants\, youth ages 12+ are welcome to register with their adult guardian. DESCRIPTION:Attention birders! Have you ever wanted the opportunity to improve your shorebird identification skills? Look no further than the Eagle Creek Ornithology Centers Fall Shorebird ID workshop! With over 34 regularly occurring shorebird species found in Indiana annually\, shorebirds can be a fun yet challenging group of species to confidently identify. Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalist\, Aidan Rominger on Tuesday\, September 24th from 5:30-7:30pm where he will teach how to properly identify shorebirds in fall plumage\, as well as other useful tips that will make identifying these challenging birds a breeze! The first half of the class will be held inside in the Eagle Creek OC classroom. The second half of the program will be out in the field to look for any shorebirds we can find in the park\, putting our classroom skills to the test! Cost for adults is $10 and youth participants are FREE (recommended for ages 12+ only). DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted the opportunity to observe migrating birds at night? Each fall\, hundreds of species of songbirds make the perilous journey from their Canadian breeding grounds\, to the jungles of South America. Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalist\, Aidan Rominger\, on Wednesday\, September 18th\, from 7:00-8:30 pm where he will go through how to properly ID many of these migrating songbird species at night\, by listening to flight calls given by each species. He will also go into depth on how to best view these migrating songbirds under the stars! The first half of the class will be inside in the classroom\, and the second half will be held in the field to listen for any migrating songbirds\, as well as see if we can view them flying past the moon using a scope and binoculars. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing\, also known as Forest Therapy\, is a nature-based wellness practice. This experience can be described as a sensory\, immersive\, and slow walk. During a walk\, we will use our senses to “bathe” in our surroundings\, using eyes\, ears\, hands\, nose\, body\, and heart to experience the world around us. This practice will be facilitated by Certified Association of Nature & Forest Therapy (ANFT) Guide & Ornithology Center Assistant Manager\, Donna Riner. During the walk\, your guide will facilitate invitations\, or prompts\, to support sensory connection to nature and provide opportunities for sharing between invitations. We will spend approximately two hours together\, with time built in for walking short distances\, wandering\, exploring\, sitting\, and sharing. Unlike a guided hike\, this walk is short\, covering only a half mile or so.
