Don’t have camera gear quite yet\, but still want to learn? This will be a great opportunity to learn about the basics of bird photography. \nThe group will meet at the Ornithology Center to practice shooting at the feeders. SUMMARY:Winter Lakefront Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs as he leads you to the Indiana Lake Michigan lakeshore in search of wintering gulls\, waterfowl\, and any vagrants that may be in the area. The event will take place on Saturday\, January 26\, 2019. We will meet at the Dick’s Sporting Goods located at 6030 West 86th Street at 6:30 am and carpool to lakefront. We will spend the morning and early afternoon visiting various sites around the Indiana lakeshore. Little time will be spent hiking\, though some hiking terrain would be considered moderate to rugged. Most of the time will be spent travelling to as many sites as possible to scan the lake. Participants can expect to return to Indianapolis around 6:00 pm. There will be a break for lunch in the Gary/Chesterton area. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required\, but appreciated. DESCRIPTION:Join Danielle Williams\, Whooping Crane Outreach Program Assistant for Indiana for the International Crane Foundation (ICF)\, for an informative program about Whooping Cranes in Indiana. \n\n\nDid you know the tallest birds in North America winter right here in Indiana? Historically\, this was not always the case. In this program\, Danielle will discuss how the Whooping Crane made its amazing comeback from fewer than 20 individuals in the 1940s to over 800 today. Learn about the creative methods used to bring Whooping Cranes back to the eastern United States\, the ongoing challenges associated with this effort\, and what the ICF is doing to help these cranes right here in Indiana. \n\n\nDanielle graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Biology before earning her M.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from Penn State. \n\n\nIn 2018 ABAS supplied a grant to the ICF to help promote Whooping Crane Awareness in Indiana. DESCRIPTION:The Eagle Creek Valley Christmas Bird Count\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northwest side of Indianapolis\, with the center being in Eagle Creek Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can report the birds that visit your feeder once you have arranged to do so with the count compiler. \nMeet at the Ornithology Center  to pick up an information packet for your assigned area before heading out to bird. The Ornithology Center will open at 8:00 am. A pitch-in lunch for all participants will be held at the Ornithology Center at noon to tally our bird count and to reorganize groups to head back outside to cover additional areas if needed. \nTo participate please register prior to December 9 so birding teams can be formed and count plans made in advance. DESCRIPTION:Whether you are a first-time birdwatcher or an experienced pro\, your help is needed during the 119th annual National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This will be the 108th anniversary of the Indianapolis CBC\, which was first held in December 1910. \nNationwide\, more than 2\,000 CBCs are conducted during the holiday season. National Audubon and other organizations use the data collected in this longest running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation actions. General information about the National Audubon Society and the Annual Christmas Bird Count can be found at www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count \nThe Indianapolis CBC\, sponsored by the ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northeast side of Indianapolis\, with the center point being in Fort Harrison State Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the Count Circle\, you can stay home and report the birds that visit your bird feeders. \nThe most exciting news is that CBC is a free program! SUMMARY:Goose Pond Area Raptor Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs as he leads you to Greene County in search of migrating and wintering raptors. Goose Pond\, and surrounding areas in Greene County\, have become a prime wintering area and migratory stop-over for raptors such as Northern Harrier\, Rough-legged Hawk\, Merlin\, Golden Eagle\, and Short-eared Owl. The event will take place on Saturday\, December 8\, 2018. Meet at the Kroger located at 1930 East Main Street in Plainfield at 10:00 am and carpool to Goose Pond. We plan to stop for lunch at the McDonald’s in Linton before we begin searching Greene County for birds. \nWe will spend the afternoon and evening trying to find as many birds of prey as possible. We will remain in the area through sunset in hopes of seeing Short-eared Owls emerge from their daytime roost. Participants can expect to spend a lot of time driving in their vehicles until we find a raptor to study. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Working at Indy Park’s Garfield Park Conservatory gives her a chance to show visitors coffee trees and teach visitors about conservation. Clearing land for the production of staple crops such as bananas\, pineapples\, and coffee is one of the biggest threats to our rainforests. Coffee can grow in harmony with the rainforest\, if we demand it. We can vote with our dollars to support conservation through the kind of coffee we buy. Learn how the small choices we make can make a difference. We will also sample different varieties of Rainforest Alliance coffees. Join us!
