SUMMARY:Gulls & Waterfowl at the Lakefront
DESCRIPTION:Join experienced birders Eric and Tina Rosier as they lead you along the Indiana Lake Michigan lakeshore in search of wintering gulls\, waterfowl\, and any vagrants that may be in the area. Eric and Tina have been casual backyard birders for most of their adult lives\, but since 2017\, they’ve avidly been learning\, seeking\, and counting as many species as possible\, and recording those sightings on eBird. In 2020\, with help from the Indiana birding community\, they both joined the “Indiana 300 Club” by seeing over 300+ species in the state in a single calendar year. \nWe’ll meet at Washington Park Beach in Michigan City at 8:00 am local time (9:00 am EST). We will spend the morning and early afternoon visiting various sites around the Indiana lakeshore.  Little time will be spent hiking\, though some hiking terrain would be considered moderate to rugged.  Most of the time will be spent traveling to as many sites as possible to scan the lake. \nParticipants can expect to return to the Indianapolis area around 6:00 pm EST.  There will be a break for lunch in the Gary/Chesterton area. \nThe field trip is free but is limited to 12 participants and registration is required.  Priority registration is available to ABAS members through December 20\, 2021.  After that date\, if any open spots remain\, non-members may register. DESCRIPTION:The Eagle Creek Valley Christmas Bird Count (CBC)\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northwest side of Indianapolis\, with the center being in Eagle Creek Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can report the birds that visit your feeder once you have arranged to do so with the count compiler. \nMeet at the Ornithology Center to pick up an information packet for your assigned area before heading out to bird. The Ornithology Center will open at 8:00 am. A pitch-in lunch for all participants will be held at the Ornithology Center at noon to tally our bird count and to reorganize groups to head back outside to cover additional areas if needed. \nTo participate please register prior to December 9 so birding teams can be formed and count plans made in advance. DESCRIPTION:Pre-register to determine the meeting location. \nWhether you are a first-time birdwatcher or an experienced pro\, your help is needed during the 122nd annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This will be the 111th anniversary of the Indianapolis CBC\, which was first held in December 1910. \nNationwide\, more than 2\,000 CBCs are conducted during the holiday season. National Audubon Society and other organizations use the data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation actions. General information about the National Audubon Society and the Annual Christmas Bird Count can be found at www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count. \nThe Indianapolis CBC\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northeast side of Indianapolis\, with the center point being in Fort Harrison State Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can stay home and report the birds that visit your bird feeders. \nThe most exciting news is that CBC is a free program. The hikes will be led by ABAS President Rob Ripma. \nMeet at the free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

SUMMARY:Waterfowl\, Raptors\, & Owls at Goose Pond - FULL
DESCRIPTION:Join accomplished birders Bill Sharkey and Richard Garrett as they lead us on a field trip to Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area (FWA) in search of waterfowl and raptors.  In addition to viewing multiple species of ducks and geese\, we should see Northern Harriers hunting low over the fields.  Just before dusk\, Short-eared Owls will likely appear.  Both Bill and Richard are members of the “Indiana 300 Club” having each seen over 300 species of birds in the state in a single calendar year. \nWe’ll meet at the Goose Pond Visitor’s Center parking lot at 12:00 pm. The center has modern\, indoor restrooms.  The majority of the field trip will be by car with multiple stops to get out to view birds.  As always\, bring your binoculars and spotting scope if you have one. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. Geriann is a Furbearer Biologist for the Indiana DNR.  She received her Bachelors in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences from the University of Illinois and her Masters in Wildlife Management from West Virginia University in 2012.  She spent 3 years with the Wisconsin DNR and 1.5 years with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission before starting with the Indiana DNR in May 2017. \nWe respectfully request that any non-vaccinated attendees wear masks.

DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS President and Field Trip Chair Chuck Anderson for a field trip to Celery Bog Nature Area. This will be a great opportunity to view waterfowl and year-round resident birds. Target birds are waterfowl\, including Northern Pintail\, Redhead\, and Canvasback ducks. Swans\, Greater White-fronted Goose\, and various species of grebe also frequent Celery Bog. \nThe terrain is flat and trails are well managed. The hike will be 2 to 2 1/2 miles. Restrooms are available at the Lilly Nature Center after 10:00 am. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Dress appropriately for the weather. DESCRIPTION:Join experienced bird hike leader Laurie Voss on a field trip to the Lye Creek Prairie Burn\, aka “The Burn”\, in search of fall sparrows\, migrant waterfowl\, and possible shorebirds. We’ll meet at The Burn at 9:00 am. \nParticipants should expect to hike two to three miles. The terrain is flat\, but there are no defined trails. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate walking shoes. As always\, don’t forget your binoculars. There are NO restroom facilities on the property. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. SUMMARY:Brown Bears of McNeil River
DESCRIPTION:Join Chuck Anderson\, ABAS President and Field Trip Chair\, for an informative program about the Brown Bears of McNeil River State Game Sanctuary in Alaska. Chuck will share his four-day experience watching Brown Bears interact\, feed\, sleep and play.  Many of the bears photographed were within 25 feet and one curious cub came within 5 feet before mom called him back to her side. \nChuck slept outdoors in a tent he brought\, supplied his own food\, purified his water\, and cooked on a camp stove. \nWe respectfully request that any non-vaccinated attendees wear masks. \nPhoto courtesy of Chuck Anderson.
