SUMMARY:Celery Bog Nature Area - FULL
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS President and Field Trip Chair Chuck Anderson for a field trip to Celery Bog Nature Area. This will be a great opportunity to view early migrating waterfowl and year-round resident birds. Target birds include Northern Pintail\, Redhead\, and Canvasback ducks. Swans\, Greater White-fronted Goose\, and various species of grebe also frequent Celery Bog. Mudflats on the south side may have shorebirds depending on water levels. \nThe terrain is flat and trails are well managed. The hike will be 2 to 2 1/2 miles. Modern restrooms are available at the Lilly Nature Center. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Dress appropriately for the weather. We’ll meet at 8:00 am in the first parking lot on the right\, inside the park. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 10 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration is available for ABAS members through March 12\, 2022\, at which time if there are any spots open\, registration will be open to non-members. Email Chuck Anderson at chucka1999@aol.com or text (317) 767-5438 to reserve your spot on the field trip. DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS at The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields for bird hikes on this beautiful property along the White River and Central Canal. The hikes will be led by an experienced birder from ABAS. \nMeet at the free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by emailing us at info@amosbutleraudubon.org. \n  \nAbout Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

DESCRIPTION:Join Chuck Anderson\, ABAS President\, for a trip to West Park in Carmel. Listen for the “peenting” sounds of a male woodcock as it attempts to court a female during the mating season. Watch the male perform an aerial display and listen to the sound of its twittering wings as it tries to attract a female. \nWe’ll be stationary with little walking required.  Dress appropriately for the weather. We’ll meet at 6:30 pm at the Jill Perelman Pavilion located at 3000 W 116th St\, Carmel\, IN 46032\, 200 yards west of the West Park entrance. The gate to West Park will be closed. SUMMARY:Great Backyard Bird Count Caravan - FULL
DESCRIPTION:If you need an incentive to get outside in mid-winter\, join Chuck Anderson\, ABAS Field Trip chair and President\, as he leads you to three local parks in conjunction with the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) worldwide event. At each park\, we will record the species and number of all birds seen and submit that list to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology via eBird. To get more information on the GBBC\, go to birdcount.org. \nWe will meet at 9:00 am in the parking lot at Flowing Well Park\, 5100 E 116th St\, Carmel. From there we will caravan to Hazel Landing Park\, Meadowlark Park\, and then to our final stop\, Central Park\, where restrooms will be available. Participants will be notified in advance if there are any changes to the itinerary. \nMake sure you dress appropriately for the weather conditions and don’t forget your binoculars. \nThe field trip is free but limited to 10 participants\, and registration is required. SUMMARY:Gulls & Waterfowl at the Lakefront
DESCRIPTION:Join experienced birders Eric and Tina Rosier as they lead you along the Indiana Lake Michigan lakeshore in search of wintering gulls\, waterfowl\, and any vagrants that may be in the area. Eric and Tina have been casual backyard birders for most of their adult lives\, but since 2017\, they’ve avidly been learning\, seeking\, and counting as many species as possible\, and recording those sightings on eBird. In 2020\, with help from the Indiana birding community\, they both joined the “Indiana 300 Club” by seeing over 300+ species in the state in a single calendar year. \nWe’ll meet at Washington Park Beach in Michigan City at 8:00 am local time (9:00 am EST). We will spend the morning and early afternoon visiting various sites around the Indiana lakeshore.  Little time will be spent hiking\, though some hiking terrain would be considered moderate to rugged.  Most of the time will be spent traveling to as many sites as possible to scan the lake. \nParticipants can expect to return to the Indianapolis area around 6:00 pm EST.  There will be a break for lunch in the Gary/Chesterton area. \nThe field trip is free but is limited to 12 participants and registration is required.  Priority registration is available to ABAS members through December 20\, 2021.  After that date\, if any open spots remain\, non-members may register. SUMMARY:Eagle Creek Valley CBC 
DESCRIPTION:The Eagle Creek Valley Christmas Bird Count (CBC)\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northwest side of Indianapolis\, with the center being in Eagle Creek Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can report the birds that visit your feeder once you have arranged to do so with the count compiler. \nMeet at the Ornithology Center to pick up an information packet for your assigned area before heading out to bird. The Ornithology Center will open at 8:00 am. A pitch-in lunch for all participants will be held at the Ornithology Center at noon to tally our bird count and to reorganize groups to head back outside to cover additional areas if needed. \nTo participate please register prior to December 9 so birding teams can be formed and count plans made in advance. DESCRIPTION:Pre-register to determine the meeting location. \nWhether you are a first-time birdwatcher or an experienced pro\, your help is needed during the 122nd annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This will be the 111th anniversary of the Indianapolis CBC\, which was first held in December 1910. \nNationwide\, more than 2\,000 CBCs are conducted during the holiday season. National Audubon Society and other organizations use the data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation actions. General information about the National Audubon Society and the Annual Christmas Bird Count can be found at www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count. \nThe Indianapolis CBC\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northeast side of Indianapolis\, with the center point being in Fort Harrison State Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can stay home and report the birds that visit your bird feeders. \nThe most exciting news is that CBC is a free program. To participate\, please register prior to December 11 so that birding teams and count plans can be made in advance of the count. Register to participate by calling John Schaust at (317) 208-4021 or emailing schaust@gmail.com. \nOur birding teams will gather for lunch at a nearby restaurant to tally our morning count total. If needed teams may cover additional areas after lunch.

SUMMARY:Adventures in Bird Training
DESCRIPTION:Join Jenna McElroy\, Assistant Park Manager\, and Rachael Ledbetter\, Naturalist\, to learn how the Eagle Creek Ornithology Center’s Raptor Ambassadors are trained for educational programs. Since attending a training workshop at Avian Behavior International in San Diego in the spring of 2020\, they have put new training methods into practice.  Jenna and Rachael will share their training successes and challenges through video clips and with some help from a few of their feathered coworkers. \nIndy Parks has a mask rule that all people\, regardless of vaccination status\, need to follow at the program.
