SUMMARY:Lye Creek Burn - Fall Sparrows - FULL
DESCRIPTION:Contact Chuck Anderson to be put on a standby list for this FULL field trip. \nJoin ABAS Secretary and experienced bird hike leader Laurie Voss on a field trip to the Lye Creek Prairie Burn\, aka “The Burn”\, in search of fall sparrows\, migrant waterfowl\, and possible shorebirds. We’ll meet at The Burn at 8:30 am. \nParticipants should expect to hike two to three miles. The terrain is flat though there are no defined trails. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate walking shoes. As always\, don’t forget your binoculars. There are NO restroom facilities on the property. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, the field trip is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration is available for ABAS members until October 8th\, after which time\, if there are spots available\, non-members may register. To register email Chuck Anderson at chucka1999@aol.com or text Chuck at (317) 767-5438. \nThe Burn is on County Road 650 N in Montgomery County in the general area of Crawfordsville. To get there from I74 take the US 231 exit and go north just under 3 miles to County Road 550 N. Take a right on County Road 550 N for just over a mile to County Road 150 E. Take a left on County Road 150 E and continue to County Road 650 N. Take a right on County Road 650 N for less than a mile to The Burn which will be on the right. The address given is approximate. DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS at The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields for bird hikes on this beautiful property along the White River and Central Canal. The hikes will be led by an experienced birder from ABAS. \nMeet at the free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by emailing us at info@amosbutleraudubon.org. \n  \nAbout Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

SUMMARY:Teter Retreat and Organic Farm Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Chuck Anderson\, ABAS President and Field Trip Chair\, as he leads a field trip to Teter Retreat in search of warblers\, other fall migrants and resident birds. Mowed trails wind through woodlands\, prairies\, and along the White River. The landscape is generally flat\, but there are approximately 40 stairs to climb toward the end of the bird hike. Modern restrooms are available. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration will be given to ABAS members through August 29\, 2022\, at which time if there are any spots available\, registration will be open to non-members. Email Chuck Anderson at chucka1999@aol.com or text him at (317) 767-5438 to reserve your spot on the field trip. \nPlease remember to dress for the weather\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring any water\, hats\, bug spray\, and sunscreen you need. SUMMARY:Fall Warblers & Migrants – Strawtown Koteewi Park
DESCRIPTION:Join local birder and ABAS field trip leader\, Terry Ballenger\, as we look for migrating fall warblers and resident birds in the 800-acre park. We’ll meet at the Taylor Center of Natural History building parking lot at 8:00 am and bird on foot from there. The terrain is flat and the trails are well defined. The Taylor Center opens at 10:00 am and has modern\, well-maintained restrooms\, as well as great cultural exhibits. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. From the Rooftop Garden Cocktail Lounge\, mingle with ABAS members while observing an active swift colony\, plus Common Nighthawks. There is a limit of 15 for this event and registration is required. The best viewing will be 8:30 to 9:30. \nThere is parking on the street outside the building or lot at Woodlawn Ave. just north of the building right off of Woodlawn and Virginia. Go to the side of the theatre building near Kuma’s Korner restaurant to find a building entrance door and hall with elevator. Take the elevator to the top floor.
