DESCRIPTION:The Eagle Creek Valley Christmas Bird Count (CBC)\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle centered in Eagle Creek Park on the northwest side of Indianapolis. This year the count will be held on Sunday December 18\, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm with a pitch-in lunch for all participants at the Ornithology Center 12:00pm – 1:00 pm. \n To participate\, please reach out to the count coordinator\, Aidan Rominger\, by December 1 so birding teams can be formed and count plans made in advance. Call the Ornithology Center at (317) 327-2473\, or email aidan.rominger@indy.gov. Stop by the Ornithology Center (6515 Delong Road\, Indianapolis\, IN 46278) to pick up an information packet for your assigned area the week before the count\, December 5 – 10\, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. \n If you are a beginning birder\, you may be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can report the birds that visit your feeder once you have arranged to do so with the count compiler.

DESCRIPTION:Pre-register to determine the meeting location. \nWhether you are a first-time birdwatcher or an experienced pro\, your help is needed during the 123rd annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This will be the 112th anniversary of the Indianapolis CBC\, which was first held in December 1910. \nNationwide\, more than 2\,000 CBCs are conducted during the holiday season. National Audubon Society and other organizations use the data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation actions. General information about the National Audubon Society and the Annual Christmas Bird Count can be found at www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count. \nThe Indianapolis CBC\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northeast side of Indianapolis\, with the center point being in Fort Harrison State Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can stay home and report the birds that visit your bird feeders. \nThe most exciting news is that CBC is a free program. DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS at The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields for bird hikes on this beautiful property along the White River and Central Canal. The hikes will be led by an experienced birder from ABAS. \nMeet at the free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by emailing us at info@amosbutleraudubon.org. \n  \nAbout Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

SUMMARY:Caves and Caving in Indiana
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dean Wiseman is a professor of biology at the University of Indianapolis with multidisciplinary expertise in physiology\, cell biology\, pathophysiology and pharmacology. He is also an avid caver and will be sharing his knowledge of caving with us this December. Dean has vast caving experience beyond Indiana such as 5 expeditions to Lechuguilla\, multiple visits to Mammoth Cave\, and his ongoing participation in ground-breaking surveys of Vietnam’s Tiger Cave System. However\, he is also a very avid caver within the state as a former director and active member of the Central Indiana Grotto—our local chapter of the National Speleological Society. This talk will be a great opportunity for those curious about caving in Indiana and ways to get involved in the local speleological scene.

DESCRIPTION:Contact Chuck Anderson to be put on a standby list for this FULL field trip. \nJoin ABAS President and Field Trip Chair Chuck Anderson for a field trip to Celery Bog Nature Area. This will be a great opportunity to view waterfowl and year-round resident birds. Target birds are waterfowl\, including Northern Pintail\, Redhead\, and Canvasback ducks. Swans\, Greater White-fronted Goose\, and various species of grebe also frequent Celery Bog. \nThe terrain is flat and trails are well managed. The hike will be 2 to 2.5 miles. Restrooms are available at the Lilly Nature Center. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Dress appropriately for the weather. We’ll meet at 8:00 am in the first parking lot on the right\, inside the park. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration is available for ABAS members through October 15\, 2022\, at which time if there are any spots open\, registration will be open to non-members. DESCRIPTION:Contact Chuck Anderson to be put on a standby list for this FULL field trip. \nJoin ABAS Secretary and experienced bird hike leader Laurie Voss on a field trip to the Lye Creek Prairie Burn\, aka “The Burn”\, in search of fall sparrows\, migrant waterfowl\, and possible shorebirds. We’ll meet at The Burn at 8:30 am. \nParticipants should expect to hike two to three miles. The terrain is flat though there are no defined trails. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate walking shoes. As always\, don’t forget your binoculars. There are NO restroom facilities on the property. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, the field trip is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration is available for ABAS members until October 8th\, after which time\, if there are spots available\, non-members may register. SUMMARY:Eagle Creek Bird Hikes
DESCRIPTION:Each Sunday year-round at Eagle Creek Park. Meet us at 9:00 am at the Ornithology Center. \nThis event is free\, though a gate fee to Eagle Creek Park applies. \nWe will be following federal\, state\, and local guidelines for masks and other COVID prevention measures during the hike.
