DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenfield Birders for a day birding in and around Greenfield. We are participating in the 123rd National Christmas Bird Count (CBC) in which we will tally every individual bird we find within our assigned region. Don’t worry if you can only come for a couple of hours\, or even just watch your feeders from home. All levels of involvement and skill are welcome. There will be driving and hiking involved if you participate in the field\, so dress for the weather. \nWe will meet at 6:45 am at Jack’s Donuts on Highway 9 in Greenfield where breakfast will be provided. Here we will split up into groups to cover more ground and ensure our teams are prepared. DESCRIPTION:Pre-register to determine the meeting location. \nWhether you are a first-time birdwatcher or an experienced pro\, your help is needed during the 123rd annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This will be the 112th anniversary of the Indianapolis CBC\, which was first held in December 1910. \nNationwide\, more than 2\,000 CBCs are conducted during the holiday season. National Audubon Society and other organizations use the data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation actions. General information about the National Audubon Society and the Annual Christmas Bird Count can be found at www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count. \nThe Indianapolis CBC\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northeast side of Indianapolis\, with the center point being in Fort Harrison State Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. In addition\, if your home is within the boundaries of the count circle\, you can stay home and report the birds that visit your bird feeders. \nThe most exciting news is that CBC is a free program. To participate\, please register prior to December 11 so that birding teams and count plans can be made in advance of the count. Register to participate by emailing John Schaust at schaust@sbcglobal.net. \nOur birding teams will gather for lunch at a nearby restaurant to tally our morning count total. If needed teams may cover additional areas after lunch.

The hikes will be led by an experienced birder from ABAS. \nMeet at the free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by emailing us at info@amosbutleraudubon.org. \n  \nAbout Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dean Wiseman is a professor of biology at the University of Indianapolis with multidisciplinary expertise in physiology\, cell biology\, pathophysiology and pharmacology. He is also an avid caver and will be sharing his knowledge of caving with us this December. Dean has vast caving experience beyond Indiana such as 5 expeditions to Lechuguilla\, multiple visits to Mammoth Cave\, and his ongoing participation in ground-breaking surveys of Vietnam’s Tiger Cave System. However\, he is also a very avid caver within the state as a former director and active member of the Central Indiana Grotto—our local chapter of the National Speleological Society. This talk will be a great opportunity for those curious about caving in Indiana and ways to get involved in the local speleological scene.

DESCRIPTION:The Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab is a wonderful place to bird watch\, with over 165 different species sightings being recorded since 2002. No experience is necessary\, and the hike will be led by one of the bird experts at Marian. The only things that are necessary are binoculars and a little bit of patience! \nWe will meet at the St. Francis statue just west of the Allison Mansion on the Marian campus at 8:00 am every Wednesday starting August 31 and ending November 16. Bring water to drink and wear comfortable shoes. No reservation is required.  Contact David Benson\, dbenson@marian.edu\, with questions. Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early to find parking.

Just before dusk\, Short-eared Owls will likely appear. \nMeet at the Goose Pond Visitor’s Center parking lot at 1:00 pm. The majority of the field trip will be by car with multiple stops to get out to view birds. Make sure to bring your binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. A limited number of binoculars will be available to lend if needed. \nThis field trip is limited to 10 participants and prior registration is required. SUMMARY:Bird Walks in the Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab
DESCRIPTION:The Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab is a wonderful place to bird watch\, with over 165 different species sightings being recorded since 2002. No experience is necessary\, and the hike will be led by one of the bird experts at Marian. The only things that are necessary are binoculars and a little bit of patience! \nWe will meet at the St. Francis statue just west of the Allison Mansion on the Marian campus at 8:00 am every Wednesday starting August 31 and ending November 16. Bring water to drink and wear comfortable shoes. No reservation is required.  Contact David Benson\, dbenson@marian.edu\, with questions. Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early to find parking.
