SUMMARY:Winter Lakefront Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join birders extraordinaire Lisa and Randy Vanderbilt as they lead you in search of wintering gulls\, waterfowl and any vagrants that may be in the area at the Indiana Lake Michigan lakeshore. The event will take place on Saturday\, February 8\, 2020. We will meet at the Menards off I65 exit #140 in Lebanon at 6:30 am in the SE corner of the parking lot and caravan/carpool to the lakefront. We will spend the morning and early afternoon visiting various sites around the Indiana lakeshore. Little time will be spent hiking\, though some hiking terrain would be considered moderate to rugged. Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather conditions\, Most of the time will be spent traveling to as many sites as possible to scan the lake. Participants can expect to return to Indianapolis around 6:00 pm. There will be a break for lunch in the Gary/Chesterton area. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but appreciated. SUMMARY:Celery Bog Nature Area Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join our new ABAS Field Trip Chair\, Chuck Anderson\, for a field trip to Celery Bog Nature Area near West Lafayette. This will be a great opportunity to view waterfowl and year-round resident birds. Target birds are Redhead and Canvasback ducks\, with a possibility of spotting a Long-tailed Duck. Snow Goose and Greater White-fronted Goose also frequent the bog. \nThe terrain is flat and trails are well managed. The hike will be 2 to 2 1/2 miles. Restrooms are available at the Lilly Nature Center after 10:00 am. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Dress appropriately for the weather. We’ll meet at 8:00 am at the Marathon gas station located at the I65 exit #175 Lafayette/Delphi and caravan from there. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 12 participants and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Whether your child is curious about the natural world\, loves to go birding or has never birded before\, ABAS volunteers will help your child discover birding and might light within them the curiosity for nature. This workshop is great for scouts working on badges. The free event will include a short lesson on the basics of birding; bird watching out on the trails and inside at the feeder station windows; learning how to collect data; followed by snacks and an awards ceremony. Bring binoculars or field guides if you have them. Dress for cold weather and hiking. \nThis event is for kids ages 5 to 15 years old with adults. Registration is required as space is limited. The Ornithology Center will open at 8:00 am. This will be the 109th anniversary of the Indianapolis CBC\, which was first held in December 1910. \nNationwide\, more than 2\,000 CBCs are conducted during the holiday season. National Audubon Society and other organizations use the data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation actions. General information about the National Audubon Society and the Annual Christmas Bird Count can be found at www.audubon.org/conservation/join-christmas-bird-count. \nThe Indianapolis CBC\, sponsored by ABAS\, takes place within a 15-mile-diameter circle covering the northeast side of Indianapolis\, with the center point being in Fort Harrison State Park. \nIf you are a beginning birder\, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher. DESCRIPTION:ABAS is excited to partner with The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields for bird hikes on this beautiful property along the White River and Central Canal. The hikes will be led by ABAS President Rob Ripma. \nMeet at Lake Terrace in the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres. There is free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The loop parking is closer to the hike start and the address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. Once in the parking area\, walk north through the entrance down a very short trail to Lake Terrace. Alternatively\, you can park in the main Newfield parking lots and walk down to the starting point. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by emailing us at info@amosbutleraudubon.org. \nJoin us as we explore the nesting species of this wonderful property. \n  \nAbout Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn\, no surprise\, one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

DESCRIPTION:Join Central Indiana Land Trust (CILTI) for a morning of invasive species control at this nature preserve in Avon. Volunteers will work to remove invasive honeysuckle from the preserve. \nWhat to Expect and Bring: \nBring work gloves if you have them\, and wear boots and long pants. If you don’t have gloves\, CILTI will provide some. Please dress for the weather as we will work rain or shine. No experience needed. \nLocation and Parking: \nDirections to Burnett Woods from US-36 in Avon – head south on Dan Jones Rd (CR 800 East).  At the roundabout at CR 100 South\, turn left.  You can park in the back row of the Light and Life Methodist Church. CILTI staff will meet participants in the lot at 10:00 am. \nRegistration is required. Register at CILTI’s event page.
