DESCRIPTION:The Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab is a wonderful place to bird watch\, with over 165 different species sightings being recorded since 2002. No experience is necessary\, and the hike will be led by one of the bird experts at Marian. The only things that are necessary are binoculars and a little bit of patience! \nWe will meet at the St. Francis statue just west of the Allison Mansion on the Marian campus at 8:00 am every Wednesday starting September 3 and ending November 17. DESCRIPTION:Fall migration is lively and full of warblers\, raptors\, sparrows\, and other songbirds. During the walk\, expert birder Don Gorney will point out birds seen and heard and provide details on how to identify cryptic fall warblers\, drab flycatchers\, and LBJ’s\, or Little Brown Jobs\, also known as sparrows. \nWalks are approximately two hours on relatively even terrain. There is no fee for the walk but standard gate admission applies. Meet in the northeast corner of the Delaware Lake parking lot at 8:00 am.

SUMMARY:Warblers and Migrants – McCloud Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:Join ecologist\, botanist\, and ABAS bird hike leader\, Roger Hedge\, as we look for migrating fall warblers and year-round residents in this 232-acre park in Hendricks County. We’ll meet at the Nature Center at 8:00 am and bird on foot from there. The trails are well defined and the terrain is flat. \nThe Nature Center opens at 10:00 am and has modern restrooms\, as well as a bird feeding viewing area. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 10 participants\, and registration is required. SUMMARY:Bats of Indiana - And Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Join Ryan Slack for our September program about bats. He will touch upon everything from myths surrounding bats\, their classification and specialized anatomy\, their habits\, conservation\, why bats are important\, the threats they face\, bat species native to Indiana\, the truth about bats and rabies\, and the latest in bat call analysis. \nRyan holds a BS from Purdue University in Wildlife Science. He is currently a Principal at the engineering consulting firm Civil & Environmental Consultants\, Inc. (CEC) and also the Ecological Practice lead of their Indianapolis office.  In this position\, he coordinates projects involving threatened and endangered species\, the Endangered Species Act\, and the National Environmental Policy.  He holds CEC’s Federal Bat Scientific Collecting Permit\, which is valid for the entire range of Indiana bats and northern long-eared bats. \nWe respectfully request that any non-vaccinated attendees wear masks. \nPhoto courtesy of Chuck Anderson.

SUMMARY:Fall Warblers & Migrants – Strawtown Koteewi Park – Canceled
DESCRIPTION:Join local birder and ABAS field trip leader\, Terry Ballenger\, as we look for migrating fall warblers and resident birds in the 800-acre park. We’ll meet at the Taylor Center of Natural History building parking lot at 8:00 am and bird on foot from there. The terrain is flat and the trails are well defined. The Taylor Center opens at 10:00 am and has modern\, well-maintained restrooms\, as well as great cultural exhibits. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration will be given to ABAS local members through August 15\, 2021\, at which time if there are any spots available\, registration will be open to non-members. Email Chuck Anderson at chucka1999@aol.com to reserve your spot on the field trip. \nPlease remember to dress for the weather\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring any water\, hats\, bug spray\, and sunscreen you need.
