SUMMARY:Gardening for Birds: Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 8\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Ornithology Center (OC) to learn how to prepare native plant seeds in the fall for germination over the winter\, to support wildlife\, especially birds! Join for a brief presentation followed by a garden tour\, then practice separating pre-collected seeds & build two germination containers\, one for the center and one for you to take home! Containers created by participants for the OC will be planted in the wildlife gardens in the spring. Participants can take home a seed container of their own as well to observe the final stages of germination and to plant at their own homes! \nAll materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a clean plastic container (think plastic milk jug\, gallon or half or 2L soda bottle) to utilize in the workshop. Preregistration is required\, $15/participant. This program is geared towards adults with an interest in gardening with native plants\, youth ages 12+ are welcome to register with their adult guardian. DESCRIPTION:The Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab is a wonderful place to bird watch\, with over 165 different species sightings being recorded since 2002. No experience is necessary. The field trip will be led by Dr. David Benson. Dave is the Director of the Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab & Associate Professor of Biology at Marian University. \nWe will meet at the St. Francis Colonnade just west of the Allison Mansion on the campus of Marian University at 8:00 am. The field trip is limited to 10 participants and early registration is offered to ABAS members until Aug. 31st after which time non-members may register if there are any open spots. Each fall\, hundreds of species of songbirds make the perilous journey from their Canadian breeding grounds\, to the jungles of South America. Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalist\, Aidan Rominger\, on Wednesday\, September 18th\, from 7:00-8:30 pm where he will go through how to properly ID many of these migrating songbird species at night\, by listening to flight calls given by each species. He will also go into depth on how to best view these migrating songbirds under the stars! DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing\, also known as Forest Therapy\, is a nature-based wellness practice. This experience can be described as a sensory\, immersive\, and slow walk. During a walk\, we will use our senses to “bathe” in our surroundings\, using eyes\, ears\, hands\, nose\, body\, and heart to experience the world around us. This practice will be facilitated by Certified Association of Nature & Forest Therapy (ANFT) Guide & Ornithology Center Assistant Manager\, Donna Riner. During the walk\, your guide will facilitate invitations\, or prompts\, to support sensory connection to nature and provide opportunities for sharing between invitations. We will spend approximately two hours together\, with time built in for walking short distances\, wandering\, exploring\, sitting\, and sharing. Unlike a guided hike\, this walk is short\, covering only a half mile or so. The best viewing will be 8:30 to 9:30. \nThere is parking on the street outside the building or lot at Woodlawn Ave. just north of the building right off of Woodlawn and Virginia.
