SUMMARY:Why Bird Feeding Makes a Difference
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS Board Director Brian Cunningham for an informative program about feeding the birds. \nAnyone who has ever fed wild birds knows that it can bring joy to their lives. But\, does bird feeding just benefit people? Do the birds become dependent on the food we provide? We’ll take a look at what we have learned from various scientific studies and citizen science data on why feeding wild birds makes a difference for the health and well-being of people and for our backyard feathered visitors. \nBrian Cunningham has a love for the outdoors\, nature\, and birds. His greatest passion is helping others experience nature and opening their eyes to the wonder and beauty of birds. Brian has worked at Wild Birds Unlimited for 22 years and is their Product and Hobby Education Manager. \nBrian has a BS in Forestry with an emphasis in Forest Recreation from Purdue University.

SUMMARY:Hoosier Whooping Cranes
DESCRIPTION:Join Danielle Williams\, Whooping Crane Outreach Program Assistant for Indiana for the International Crane Foundation (ICF)\, for an informative program about Whooping Cranes in Indiana. \n\n\nDid you know the tallest birds in North America winter right here in Indiana? Historically\, this was not always the case. In this program\, Danielle will discuss how the Whooping Crane made its amazing comeback from fewer than 20 individuals in the 1940s to over 800 today. Learn about the creative methods used to bring Whooping Cranes back to the eastern United States\, the ongoing challenges associated with this effort\, and what the ICF is doing to help these cranes right here in Indiana. \n\n\nDanielle graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Biology before earning her M.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from Penn State. \n\n\nIn 2018 ABAS supplied a grant to the ICF to help promote Whooping Crane Awareness in Indiana. The ICF also received a Birdathon grant in 2018. \n\nTo learn more about the ICF and their work\, please visit savingcranes.org.

SUMMARY:Coffee - A History and Conservation
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Helmbold\, ABAS Education Chair\, loves coffee. Most people love coffee\, though are most people as obsessed with coffee as she is? Jessica presents the history of coffee\, and how to select and brew the best coffees. Working at Indy Park’s Garfield Park Conservatory gives her a chance to show visitors coffee trees and teach visitors about conservation. Clearing land for the production of staple crops such as bananas\, pineapples\, and coffee is one of the biggest threats to our rainforests. Coffee can grow in harmony with the rainforest\, if we demand it. We can vote with our dollars to support conservation through the kind of coffee we buy. Learn how the small choices we make can make a difference. We will also sample different varieties of Rainforest Alliance coffees. Join us!

SUMMARY:Dawn to Dusk: Two Young Birders' Take on a Big Day
DESCRIPTION:Last spring\, five young birders took on a grueling 24-hour competition known as a Big Day. Hyped up on Red Bull and various forms of carbohydrates\, the group logged 151 species despite birding on April 30\, an early date during migration. Although it poured most of the day\, these young birders were still able to find birds such as Chuck-will’s-widow\, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck\, Wilson’s Phalarope\, and Barn Owl. Join Matthias Benko and Ceth Williams at Holliday Park for an account of their day\, from midnight to midnight.

SUMMARY:Bubbly Birder Big Year
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Amy Hodson set out on an Indiana Big Year with the goal of seeing 300 species of birds in the state\, and to catalog her adventures along the way via the “Bubbly Birder” Facebook page.  By the end of the year\, Amy was the first female in Indiana to log 300 species of birds in a single year. \n\nWhat bird could be found by wading through waist-high flood water from the Wabash River?\nWhat FIRST state record was found at a feeder a mere 10 minutes from home?\nWhat did her first EVER lake watch trip to Lake Michigan provide?\nWhat birds should she have gotten but didn’t? And why?\nWhat were the 10 lifers she picked up along the way?\n\nJoin Amy during this program as she shares stories from a whirlwind of a year that got her to 302 species as well as the highlights\, the misses\, and the stories in between. This program will be conversational\, so bring your questions and we will see you there!

SUMMARY:The Road to 1000!
DESCRIPTION:By today’s birding standards\, a goal of seeing 1000 species of birds seems somewhat trivial. But to some people\, it’s a big goal!  With a family of 5 children\, a full-time salaried job\, and all of the full-time tasks that go along with it\, getting to the goal has been no easy task.  Join speaker Chad Williams as he takes you on a brief journey through some of his travels in the U.S.\, Mexico\, Central America\, and South America. \nChad Williams has been actively birding since 2007 and has been interested in birds since the 5th grade.  He loves nature and loves to promote the enthusiasm of birds and nature to others.  He is the adult Chair of the Indiana Young Birders Club and is currently on the board of the Amos Butler Audubon Society.  In addition to birding\, Chad grows and sells Carnivorous Plants and Orchids.  He is married to Carrie and has 5 children and 2 granddaughters.

SUMMARY:Banding Saw-whet Owls in the Indiana Dunes!
DESCRIPTION:Join speaker Brad Bumgardner\, the Executive Director for the Indiana Adubon Society and previously an interpretive naturalist for the Indiana State Parks\, for our November program. \nThe Indiana Dunes began banding owls as part of Project Owlnet in 2009. The area is a gateway for migrating owls traveling along the shores of Lake Michigan and into the rest of Indiana. Since its inception\, the volunteers and staff have banded hundreds of migrating Saw-whet Owls. More impressively\, the banding station at Indiana Dunes serves as one of the largest sites for public education and viewing due to the facilities near the banding sites. Learn about the secretive migration and opportunities to view Saw-whet Owls in the Indiana Dunes.

SUMMARY:Naughty by Nature
DESCRIPTION:Join Amanda Smith\, Superintendent of Natural Resources & Education of Hamilton County Parks\, for our September program – Naughty by Nature. \nOut in the elements\, birders and outdoorsy folks often encounter some of the not-so-wonderful aspects of nature such as poison ivy\, nettles\, snakes\, chiggers\, and spiders. \nMore often than not\, myths and falsities abound. The fears and misconceptions about these “perceived” naughty natural things keep people from getting outside or making the right decisions about how to manage them\, but just an ounce of knowledge can help fight fear of the unknown. \nThis evening program will include an interactive presentation to engage the audience with myth-busting\, and will include opportunities to share experiences and solutions.
