From 22 species of hummingbirds to the Ocellated Turkey\, Belize offers birds of all shapes\, sizes\, and colors. The combination of tropical birding and a diverse and fascinating culture make Belize appealing for all levels of birders. As a bonus\, the people are super-friendly and the food is delicious! \nDavid will introduce you to the different regions of the country\, some unique birds you can find\, and give some examples of the variety of lodging that could fit a tight budget or provide a luxurious experience. David hopes to be joined via Zoom by his friend Isaias Morataya\, guide extraordinaire at Black Rock Lodge and the #3 eBirder in Belize\, who will share some of his passion for birding and answer questions as well. \nDavid is a former board member of both ABAS and the Sassafras Audubon Society and began his career as a naturalist in the Indy Parks system. \nThis will be an online program using Zoom. Participants will register using Eventbrite and there will be a limit of 90. To register go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/birding-belize-its-unbeliezeable-tickets-138804284351. SUMMARY:Examining the Ecological Consequences of Climate Change through Phenology
DESCRIPTION:Join Amanda Cantrell\, a Board Member of Indiana Phenology for our March program. Phenology is the study of the timing of recurring plant and animal life cycle stages\, such as leafing\, flowering\, and fruiting in plants and migration and reproduction in animals.  These changes are driven by climate and other abiotic factors and govern how living organisms interact with each other and even the cycling of water\, carbon\, and other elements within local and global ecosystems. \nOur climate is warming at an unprecedented rate due to human activities such as the production and burning of fossil fuels.  In this presentation\, we will explore how changes in phenology\, such as earlier Spring leafing and flowering or insect emergence driven by warming temperatures\, can be indicators of climate change’s impact on ecosystems and help elucidate downstream effects on abundance\, diversity\, and the interaction of species.  You will also learn how you as a citizen scientist can help track these changes through phenology observation to build a local dataset useful to scientists\, policymakers\, land managers\, and conservationists to mitigate and adapt to climate change. \nThis will be an online program using Zoom. Participants will register using Eventbrite and there will be a limit of 90. To register go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/examining-the-ecological-consequences-of-climate-change-through-phenology-tickets-138299099329. SUMMARY:The Dark Side of Lepidoptera
DESCRIPTION:Join Amanda Smith\, Superintendent of Natural Resources and Education for the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department\, for an informative discussion about the dark side of Lepidoptera\, specifically moths. They make up 90% of the Order of Lepidoptera. However\, they share very little of the excitement or appreciation that surrounds their more popular cousins\, the butterflies. Moths are critical to the food webs\, extremely diverse\, understudied\, and many are more striking than the prettiest butterfly. In this program we will discuss moth identification\, their importance in the ecosystem\, how to attract them\, tips on moth photography\, and provide connections to resources and projects geared to helping people learn about these fascinating and yet often overlooked insects. \nThis will be an online program using Zoom. Participants will register using Eventbrite and there will be a limit of 90. To register go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/the-dark-side-of-lepidoptera-tickets-131374539785. SUMMARY:Indiana’s Rare Plants
DESCRIPTION:Join Roger Hedge for an online program about Indiana’s rare plants. From oak savannas\, prairies\, dunes\, and natural lakes of northern Indiana\, to southern Indiana’s forested hills\, glades\, barrens\, and cypress swamps\, our state has a rich biodiversity.  These and other Indiana natural communities support a spectacular array of plant and animal species\, including nearly 450 vascular plants that are considered endangered or threatened in the state.  Many of these species occur on dedicated state nature preserves and other public lands.  \nThe Indiana Natural Heritage Data Center in the Division of Nature Preserves\, Department of Natural Resources\, tracks and monitors these rare species and high-quality natural communities.  Roger Hedge is an ecologist and botanist with the data center.  His primary duties include searching for and monitoring these natural features.  Enjoy an armchair tour of some of Indiana’s finest natural areas and the rare species they support. \nThis will be an online program using Zoom. Participants will register using Eventbrite and there will be a limit of 100. To register go to https://www.eventbrite.com/e/indianas-rare-plants-tickets-123747228291. Once we are close to the program date\, you will receive an email with an invite to a Zoom meeting. \n  \nPhoto: Roger Hedge and Scott Namestnik\, Indiana Natural Heritage Data biologists\, monitoring rare plants at Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Indiana. \nPhoto credit: Joe Robb

They make up 90% of the Order of Lepidoptera\, however\, they share very little of the excitement or appreciation that surrounds their more popular cousins\, the butterflies. \nPhoto courtesy of Chuck Anderson.

SUMMARY:A Season on the Wind – Spring Migration through the Midwest
DESCRIPTION:Every spring\, billions of birds go sweeping northward across North America. This vast parade of small migrants was the subject of Kenn Kaufman’s book A Season on the Wind\, published in April 2019. Although the book focused on the concentrations of migratory birds in the Magee Marsh area of northern Ohio\, in this program Kenn will talk about larger patterns of spring bird movements throughout the Midwest\, including central Indiana.

SUMMARY:The Secret Love Life of Birds
DESCRIPTION:Deception? Fidelity? Promiscuity? These words are not typically associated with the mating behavior of birds. But the amorous avian world is much more complex than our naturalist forefathers would have ever believed. Join Team Schaust\, father and son\, as they share research on the pair-bonding strategy of birds through some fascinating facts and humorous analogies to our own crazy courtship behaviors. \nWill Schaust has always had a love of the outdoors. He grew up camping with his family and graduated from Indiana University with a degree in Outdoor Recreation. After working at McCormick’s Creek State Park for four years\, he went to Eagle Creek Park where he is now the Ornithology Center Manager. This allows Will to continue his study into the wonderful world of birds. \nAs Chief Naturalist for Wild Birds Unlimited\, Inc. (WBU)\, John Schaust has spent the past 15 years supporting over 300 WBU stores by helping their customers be active backyard birdwatchers and thoughtful stewards of nature. Prior to joining WBU in 2004\, John spent 26 years as an Interpretive Naturalist with various federal\, state\, and local park agencies. He is an avid birder and has been a licensed bird bander for over 30 years.

SUMMARY:Why Bird Feeding Makes a Difference
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS Board Director Brian Cunningham for an informative program about feeding the birds. \nAnyone who has ever fed wild birds knows that it can bring joy to their lives. But\, does bird feeding just benefit people? Do the birds become dependent on the food we provide? We’ll take a look at what we have learned from various scientific studies and citizen science data on why feeding wild birds makes a difference for the health and well-being of people and for our backyard feathered visitors. \nBrian Cunningham has a love for the outdoors\, nature\, and birds. His greatest passion is helping others experience nature and opening their eyes to the wonder and beauty of birds. Brian has worked at Wild Birds Unlimited for 22 years and is their Product and Hobby Education Manager. \nBrian has a BS in Forestry with an emphasis in Forest Recreation from Purdue University.
