SUMMARY:Winter Lakefront Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs as he leads you to the Indiana Lake Michigan lakeshore in search of wintering gulls\, waterfowl\, and any vagrants that may be in the area. The event will take place on Saturday\, January 26\, 2019. We will meet at the Dick’s Sporting Goods located at 6030 West 86th Street at 6:30 am and carpool to lakefront. We will spend the morning and early afternoon visiting various sites around the Indiana lakeshore. Little time will be spent hiking\, though some hiking terrain would be considered moderate to rugged. Most of the time will be spent travelling to as many sites as possible to scan the lake. Participants can expect to return to Indianapolis around 6:00 pm. There will be a break for lunch in the Gary/Chesterton area. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required\, but appreciated. SUMMARY:Goose Pond Area Raptor Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs as he leads you to Greene County in search of migrating and wintering raptors. Goose Pond\, and surrounding areas in Greene County\, have become a prime wintering area and migratory stop-over for raptors such as Northern Harrier\, Rough-legged Hawk\, Merlin\, Golden Eagle\, and Short-eared Owl. The event will take place on Saturday\, December 8\, 2018. Meet at the Kroger located at 1930 East Main Street in Plainfield at 10:00 am and carpool to Goose Pond. We plan to stop for lunch at the McDonald’s in Linton before we begin searching Greene County for birds. \nWe will spend the afternoon and evening trying to find as many birds of prey as possible. We will remain in the area through sunset in hopes of seeing Short-eared Owls emerge from their daytime roost. Participants can expect to spend a lot of time driving in their vehicles until we find a raptor to study. \nThe event is free and open to the public. The parking is limited at our destination. We will be walking through tall weeds and grass and through muddy areas\, so please dress accordingly. The Burn is located in Montgomery County and is the most reliable place for viewing Smith’s Longspurs in Indiana\, as the property is managed specifically for them. While in the area\, we will also seek out any raptors\, waterfowl\, and shorebirds that may be present. SUMMARY:ABAS Goose Pond FWA Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Mark Welter for a trip to Goose Pond FWA in search of waterfowl. Located in Greene County just south of the town of Linton\, Goose Pond’s 8000+ acres represent Indiana’s largest and most successful habitat restoration project. Since its completion in 2008\, Goose Pond has been a magnet for migrating waterfowl\, waders\, shorebirds\, and songbirds. Mid-March can be expected to produce an interesting mix of lingering winter birds and early Spring arrivals. \nOur primary focus will be on dabbling and diving ducks. Additionally\, geese\, cranes\, American White Pelicans\, and shorebird species may be possible. We will primarily bird from the roads and parking areas and may take brief hikes along the levees if the situation warrants. Good water-resistant boots are advisable for this trip. Due to the distances that can be involved in surveying this property\, bring a spotting scope if you have one on hand. DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs as he leads you to the Indiana Lake Michigan lakeshore in search of wintering gulls\, waterfowl\, and any vagrants that may be in the area. The event will take place on Saturday\, February 3\, 2018. We will meet at the Dick’s Sporting Goods located at 6030 West 86th Street at 6:30 am and carpool to lakefront. We will spend the morning and early afternoon visiting various sites around the Indiana lakeshore. Little time will be spent hiking\, though some hiking terrain would be considered moderate to rugged. Most of time will be spent travelling to as many sites as possible to scan the lake. Some stops may require travelling on toll roads. Depending on weather conditions\, an evening stop to Kankakee Sands could be added to the trip. In that event\, we will break for lunch in the Gary/Chesterton area. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required\, but appreciated. DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs as he leads you to Greene County in search of migrating and wintering raptors.  Goose Pond\, and surrounding areas\, in Greene County has become a prime wintering area\, and migratory stop-over\, for raptors such as Northern Harrier\, Rough-legged Hawk\, Merlin\, Golden Eagle\, and Short-eared Owl.  The event will take place on Saturday\, January 6\, 2018.  We will meet at the Kroger located at 1930 East Main Street in Plainfield at 10am and carpool to Goose Pond.  We will stop for lunch at the McDonald’s in Linton before we begin searching Greene County for birds.  We will spend the afternoon and evening trying to find as many birds of prey as possible.  We will remain in the area through sunset in hopes of seeing Short-eared Owls emerge from their daytime roost.  Participants can expect to spend a lot of time driving in their vehicles until we find a raptor to study.  The event is free and open to the public.  Registration is not required\, but is greatly appreciated.  Please contact Scott at 317-850-4801 or msenochs@comcast.net  if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Spring Migrant Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Amy Hodson and Brown County State Park Naturalist Kashena Hottinger as they lead you on a hike through Brown County State Park.  This hike will target migrating warblers\, vireos\, tanagers\, and flycatchers.  More specifically\, this trip will target Kentucky\, Hooded\, and Worm-eating Warblers.    This hike will consist of a 2-3 mile walk through various terrains which could include steep hillsides\, so appropriate footwear should be considered. While on this hike\, Kashena will educate us on the history of Brown County State Park\, and other features of the park we may enjoy  in addition to the birding.   There is a $7 gate fee per vehicle.  We will meet at 7 am at the Walmart located at 1133 North Emerson Avenue located in Greenwood.  Participants can expect to return to Indy around 1 pm.  Registration is encouraged\, but not required. SUMMARY:Goose Pond Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Mark Welter for a trip to Goose Pond FWA in search of waterfowl. Located in Greene County just south of the town of Linton\, Goose Pond’s 8000+ acres represent Indiana’s largest and most successful habitat restoration project. Since its completion in 2008\, Goose Pond has been a magnet for migrating waterfowl\, waders\, shorebirds and songbirds. Late March can be expected to produce an interesting mix of lingering winter birds and early Spring arrivals. Our primary focus will be on dabbling and diving ducks. Additionally geese\, cranes\, American White Pelicans and shorebird species may be possible. \nWe will primarily be birding from the roads and parking areas\, and may take brief hikes along the levees if the situation warrants. Good water-resistant boots are advisable for this. Due to the distances that can be involved in surveying this property\, bring a spotting scope if you have one. If you don’t\, there will be scopes to share. Additionally\, small two-way radios to facilitate communication among vehicles while traveling would also be beneficial. \nIf time allows and there is interest\, we may also visit the Beehunter Marsh units adjacent to Goose Pond\, as well as the Dugger Unit of the Greene-Sullivan State Forest\, located a few miles to the northwest. SUMMARY:Owl Prowl and Woodcock Walk
DESCRIPTION:Head to an early spring night hike to learn about woodcock\, owls\, and other native Indiana wildlife active in the spring! \n\nCome out to the NMP EcoLab to enjoy an evening hike looking for owls\, woodcock\, and to see the handiwork of our resident beaver colony! We’ll start with a hike at dusk\, looking and listening for the elaborate aerial displays and calls of the woodcock that reside in the EcoLab\, do some owl calling\, and look for other signs of early spring wildlife activity! We’ll learn about owl adaptations and the role of owls in the ecosystem\, and will learn some really cool facts about woodcock too. \nAll ages welcome and encouraged! Bring flashlight\, binoculars\, and dress appropriately since we will be outside. \nParking is available near the Allison Mansion and in the Marian Hall lot across from Allison Mansion. We will meet at the St. Francis statue on the west side of the mansion\, and then head down to the EcoLab shortly after. \nThis event is free and family friendly!
