SUMMARY:Southside Bird Hike Old Town Waverly Park and the White River Greenway Trail
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a new bird hike on the south side of Indy? Then please join ABAS Education Chair and experienced birder\, Jessica Helmbold\, for a bird hike along the White River Greenway Trail from Old Town Waverly Park in Morgan County. The hike will take place on Sunday\, May 18\, 2025 from 8:00-10:00 am. \n This is a hidden birding gem that offers amazing views as the trail winds along the White River. Also look for late migrants and birds that usually nest along rivers and streams such as Orioles and Prothonotary Warblers. \n The hike is limited to 15 people\, is open to anyone\, but ABAS members will have priority until May 1. Participants are to meet at the trailhead parking area at Main St. and Wetzel St. in Martinsville. The GPS coordinates are 39.5569816\, -86.2713365. \n To sign up\, email Laurie Voss at laurievoss25@gmail.com or text 317-979-9101.

SUMMARY:Fern Station Hike
DESCRIPTION: Join Amos Butler Audubon Society and Central Indiana Land Trust for an invitation only hike at CILTI’s recently purchased Fern Station in Putnam County on April 26\, 2025. This is a great opportunity to visit this unbroken forest that hosts such birds as the Cerulean Warbler\, Worm-eating Warbler\, and Hooded Warbler.  \n   This is CILTI’s largest piece of land ever purchased. Donors contributed more than $1million dollars for the purchase and ABAS was one of those contributors\, donating $25\,000. This land will eventually be open to the public but currently is by arranged tours only. The hike will be led by a CILTI employee but ABAS will have a point person on site.  \n   The hike will be from 8:00-10:00am. Sturdy hiking boots and long pants are recommended. Some of the terrain may be primitive.  \n   To sign up for this special opportunity\, please email Laurie Voss at laurievoss25@gmail.com or text 317-979-9101. There is a 10 person capacity. ABAS members only may sign up until April 5. After that if there is space available\, non-members may sign up.

SUMMARY:Laura Hare Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS Education Chair and experienced birder\, Jessica Helmbold\, for a bird walk at Laura Hare Nature Preserve at Blossom Hollow in Johnson County. The hike will take place on Saturday\, April 19\, 2025 from 8:00-10:00 am. \n This is the first hike that ABAS has offered at Laura Hare Nature Preserve which is a CILTI (Central Indiana Land Trust) site. From the CILTI website is the description: “Blossom Hollow is part of a large unbroken hardwood forest block\, habitat that is key for migratory birds and forest interior nesting birds. On its ridges\, mature white and red oaks cling to slopes covered with ferns and wildflowers. In the creek valley below\, the bedrock is dotted with granite chunks — evidence of the glaciers that once covered these hills. \n When walking the trail at Blossom Hollow\, listen for the fluting of wood thrush. You might also hear the voices of two birds considered rare in Indiana: Worm-eating and Hooded Warblers. These migratory birds breed in the protected habitat of the forest interior.” \n This is a great opportunity to visit one of Johnson County’s pristine locations. The hike is limited to 10 people\, is open to anyone\, but ABAS members will have priority. Participants are to meet at the Trafalgar branch of the Johnson County Public Library at 7:45 to carpool. The lot at the CILTI site is small. \n To sign up\, email Laurie Voss at laurievoss25@gmail.com or text 317-979-9101.
