SUMMARY:Woodcock Walk – Daubenspeck Community Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin ABAS Board member Brian Cunningham for an evening walk at Daubenspeck Community Nature Park (DCNP)\, a great spot to view displaying American Woodcocks. \nWoodcocks have a very acrobatic mating display that they perform at dusk known as the sky dance. While waiting for woodcocks\, we will check the prairie and nearby woods for birds that may be going to roost in the park for the evening. \nWe will meet at 7:30 pm in the DCNP parking lot. Come experience this rite of spring for yourself as male woodcocks perform their aerial courtship displays for the females in the prairie at dusk! An indoor presentation will take place inside the Taylor Center at 6:00 pm for those interested in knowing more about the life history of this bird. Those interested in seeing the aerial display should meet the group inside the Taylor Center and will be led by a Naturalist from Hamilton County Park starting at about 6:30 pm.

DESCRIPTION:If you need an incentive to get outside in mid-winter\, join Chuck Anderson\, ABAS Field Trip chair and President\, as he leads you to four local parks in conjunction with the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) worldwide event. At each park\, we will record the species and number of all birds seen and submit that list to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology via eBird. To get more information on the GBBC\, go to birdcount.org. \nWe will meet at 9:00 am in the parking lot at River Heritage Park\, 11813 River Road\, Carmel. From there we will caravan to Founders Park\, Hazel Landing Park\, and if time permits\, Meadowlark Park\, our final stop. Heated indoor restrooms are available at Founders Park and Meadowlark Park. Participants will be notified in advance if there are any changes to the itinerary. \nMake sure you dress appropriately for the weather conditions and don’t forget your binoculars. \nThe field trip is free but limited to 10 participants\, and registration is required. SUMMARY:Winter Lakefront Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join experienced birder\, field trip leader\, and IAS board member Scott Enochs as he leads you along the Indiana Lake Michigan lakeshore in search of wintering gulls\, waterfowl\, and any vagrants that may be in the area. We’ll meet at Washington Park Beach in Michigan City (41.7281N 86.9040W) at 8:00 am local time (9:00 am EST). We will spend the morning and early afternoon visiting various sites around the Indiana lakeshore. Little time will be spent hiking\, though some hiking terrain would be considered moderate to rugged. Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Most of the time will be spent traveling to as many sites as possible to scan the lake. \nParticipants can expect to return to the Indianapolis area around 6:00 pm EST.  There may be a break for lunch in the Gary/Chesterton area. \nThe field trip is free but is limited to 10 participants and registration is required. Priority registration is available to ABAS members through January 1\, 2023. After that date\, if any open spots remain\, non-members may register. Program participants will learn about native plants and animals\, explore the links between their communities and larger ecosytems\, and discover how to create wild-life friendly habitats. The workshop will be presented by Indiana Wildlife Federation’s Habitat Programs Manager Aaron Stump. \nOur native species are best suited for the soil and weather conditions in Indiana and are the perfect plants to grow in your yard. They require no fertilizer\, no pesticides\, and less water than non-native species\, all while attracting and supporting Indiana’s wildlife. Aaron’s expertise in native plants and Indiana habitats will be a great resource for anyone interested in transforming their outdoor space into a wildlife oasis.

SUMMARY:Caves and Caving in Indiana
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dean Wiseman is a professor of biology at the University of Indianapolis with multidisciplinary expertise in physiology\, cell biology\, pathophysiology and pharmacology. He is also an avid caver and will be sharing his knowledge of caving with us this December. Dean has vast caving experience beyond Indiana such as 5 expeditions to Lechuguilla\, multiple visits to Mammoth Cave\, and his ongoing participation in ground-breaking surveys of Vietnam’s Tiger Cave System. However\, he is also a very avid caver within the state as a former director and active member of the Central Indiana Grotto—our local chapter of the National Speleological Society. This talk will be a great opportunity for those curious about caving in Indiana and ways to get involved in the local speleological scene.

This will be a great opportunity to view waterfowl and year-round resident birds. Target birds are waterfowl\, including Northern Pintail\, Redhead\, and Canvasback ducks. Swans\, Greater White-fronted Goose\, and various species of grebe also frequent Celery Bog. \nThe terrain is flat and trails are well managed. The hike will be 2 to 2.5 miles. Restrooms are available at the Lilly Nature Center. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Dress appropriately for the weather. We’ll meet at 8:00 am in the first parking lot on the right\, inside the park. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration is available for ABAS members through October 15\, 2022\, at which time if there are any spots open\, registration will be open to non-members. DESCRIPTION:Contact Chuck Anderson to be put on a standby list for this FULL field trip. \nJoin ABAS Secretary and experienced bird hike leader Laurie Voss on a field trip to the Lye Creek Prairie Burn\, aka “The Burn”\, in search of fall sparrows\, migrant waterfowl\, and possible shorebirds. We’ll meet at The Burn at 8:30 am. \nParticipants should expect to hike two to three miles. The terrain is flat though there are no defined trails. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate walking shoes. As always\, don’t forget your binoculars. There are NO restroom facilities on the property. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, the field trip is limited to 12 participants\, and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Join experienced field trip leader and expert birder Scott Enochs for a morning of birding at Morgan-Monroe State Forest.  The state forest encompasses over 25\,000 acres and possesses a crucial habitat for the breeding of forest-dependent bird species.  Birds that nest there include Cerulean\, Worm-eating\, Kentucky\, Hooded and Prothonotary Warblers\, and Wood Thrush to name a few. Trails are easy to moderate. \nWe’ll meet at 7:30 am inside the state forest at the Bryant Creek Shelter. From Old State Road 37 take the Main Forest Road at the park entrance. From (Old) Hospital Road\, turn right/north on Mauxferry Rd. and take it until it dead-ends in the parking area. \nComing from the north on IN-31\, one would turn right/west onto (Old) Hospital Rd. towards Nineveh. This is the same spot where  IN-252 would go right/east towards Edinburgh. From (Old) Hospital Road\, turn right/north on Mauxferry Rd. and take it until it dead-ends in the parking area. \nThese latitude and longitude coordinates may be helpful:  39.385124\, -86.020288 \nWe will start at Atterbury and if time allows and people are interested\, we will go to the nearby Driftwood WFA on US-31 in Edinburgh. There are not many official trails at Atterbury\, so most of the birding will be done on FWA roads\, which are paved\, so rugged terrain is not really expected. Driftwood will be mostly road birding as well\, however\, there is a trail around Plover Pit that may be included if time allows. That trail is far from rugged as well. We will expect to finish between 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join Laurie Voss\, ABAS Recording Secretary and experienced bird hike leader\, on a field trip to the Lye Creek Prairie Burn\, aka “The Burn”\, in search of migrating Smith’s Longspurs and spring migrants. The Burn is located in Montgomery County and is the most reliable place for viewing Smith’s Longspurs in Indiana. We may be joined by Clint Murray who owns the property and manages it specifically for the Longspurs and other birds. \nThe field trip is limited to 12 participants and registration is required. ABAS members only can register prior to April 2nd\, after which time\, if there are spots available\, anyone may register. SUMMARY:Celery Bog Nature Area - FULL
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS President and Field Trip Chair Chuck Anderson for a field trip to Celery Bog Nature Area. This will be a great opportunity to view early migrating waterfowl and year-round resident birds. Target birds include Northern Pintail\, Redhead\, and Canvasback ducks. Swans\, Greater White-fronted Goose\, and various species of grebe also frequent Celery Bog. Mudflats on the south side may have shorebirds depending on water levels. \nThe terrain is flat and trails are well managed. The hike will be 2 to 2 1/2 miles. Modern restrooms are available at the Lilly Nature Center. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Dress appropriately for the weather. We’ll meet at 8:00 am in the first parking lot on the right\, inside the park. \nThere is no fee for the field trip. However\, it is limited to 10 participants\, and registration is required. Priority registration is available for ABAS members through March 12\, 2022\, at which time if there are any spots open\, registration will be open to non-members. SUMMARY:Woodcock Walk – Strawtown Koteewi Park
DESCRIPTION:Unusual\, weird\, romantic\, and unique are all words used to describe the American Woodcock. Come experience this rite of spring for yourself as male woodcocks perform their aerial courtship displays for the females in the prairie at dusk! An indoor presentation will take place inside the Taylor Center at 7:00 pm for those interested in knowing more about the life history of this bird. Those interested in seeing the aerial display should meet the group inside the Taylor Center and will be led by a Naturalist from Hamilton County Park starting at about 7:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Woodcock Walk – Daubenspeck Community Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS Board member Brian Cunningham for an evening walk at Daubenspeck Community Nature Park (DCNP)\, a great spot to view displaying American Woodcocks. \nWoodcocks have a very acrobatic mating display that they perform at dusk known as the sky dance. While waiting for woodcocks\, we will check the prairie and nearby woods for birds that may be going to roost in the park for the evening. \nWe will meet at 6:30 pm in the DCNP parking lot.
