SUMMARY:Yellowwood State Forest Spring Migration Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join experienced bird hike leader Matthias Benko for a morning of birding at Yellowwood State Forest. Matthias launched Bloomington Birders\, a small birding club\, on the campus of Indiana University in 2020. He collaborated with Audubon Great Lakes to register Bloomington Birders as an official Audubon on Campus Chapter. This fall\, students at IU Bloomington “flocked” to join the birding club. \nYellowwood State Forest is a prime nesting location for warblers such as Worm-eating\, Kentucky\, Hooded and more. Other migrants should also be plentiful at this time of year. We’ll meet at T.C. Steele Historic Site at 4220 T.C Steele Road\, Nashville at 8:00am. Restrooms are available at this location. We’ll caravan from there to different locations. \nRegistration for this event is limited to 10 participants. The field trip is free but prior registration is required. Early registration is available to ABAS members until April 29 at which time non-members may register if there are any spots open. To register\, email Chuck Anderson at chucka1999@aol.com or text Chuck at 317-767-5438. \nAs always\, dress appropriately for the weather and don’t forget your binoculars. \nWorm-Eating Warbler photo courtesy of Chuck Anderson.

SUMMARY:Cerulean Warbler Research - Dr. Kamal Islam
DESCRIPTION:Join us this May for a discussion with Dr. Kamal Islam—Professor of Wildlife Biology at Ball State University. Dr. Kamal Islam has been conducting research since 2000 focused on investigating factors that may be contributing to the decline of Cerulean Warbler breeding populations in southern Indiana. He and his students have conducted baseline studies on distribution\, relative abundance\, and characteristics of territories\, including spacing\, song perch selection\, and vocalization behavior. Currently\, they are focused on breeding biology and the effects of past silvicultural practices on Cerulean Warbler abundance. He will be presenting the findings of his research during our program.

SUMMARY:Eagle Creek Park Photography Hike
DESCRIPTION:Shari McCollough is a well known birder and photographer throughout the state of Indiana as well as a gifted artist. She also leads trips to Sax-Zim Bog annually for Indiana Audubon Society and has presented at our monthly meeting. We are honored to have Shari lead our photography hike. Shari’s introduction to birds started with her love of photography\, inspired by the diversity of species that migrate through the state of Indiana. She spends most of her time at her favorite birding spot located just five minutes from her house in Crawfordsville. This spot happens to be The Lye Creek Burn where she has had the opportunity to learn so much about birds\, habitats\, and conservation. Shari’s love of birds inspired her to want to do more\, leading her to a seat on the Indiana Audubon Board of Directors. She has served two terms on the board and is now the standing Vice President and Membership Chair. Shari loves to lead trips and share her love of birds and photography with others. \nPlease meet at the Eagle Creek Park Marina at 8:30am. This hike will have a limit of ten participants and registration is required. To register please email Chuck Anderson at chucka1999@aol.com or text him at (317)767-5438. \nPhoto courtesy of Shari Mcollough.

SUMMARY:Warbler Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs\, experienced birding program presenter and IAS board member\, in learning the basics of warbler identification. Birdwatchers get very excited about spring migration when species are moving from their winter ground to their breeding grounds. SUMMARY:Inclusive & Accessible Birding - Sam Newkirk
DESCRIPTION:Join us this February for a discussion with Sam Newkirk—program chair for the Amos Butler Audubon Society. He will review the best practices for leading accessible bird hikes and nature programs. He will discuss the distinction between segregated accessible programming and integrated accessible design. Sam is a great resource for those wanting to know more about how to welcome a broader audience to your birding outings. He is passionate about leading accessible birding hikes at his place of work—Eagle Creek Park—and would like to share his knowledge with more people looking to expand the reach of our organization. \n

SUMMARY:Certified Wildlife Habitat Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Certified Wildlife Habitat Workshop is a unique educational opportunity for individuals and families who are interested in protecting the natural beauty and local wildlife of Indiana. Program participants will learn about native plants and animals\, explore the links between their communities and larger ecosytems\, and discover how to create wild-life friendly habitats. The workshop will be presented by Indiana Wildlife Federation’s Habitat Programs Manager Aaron Stump. \nOur native species are best suited for the soil and weather conditions in Indiana and are the perfect plants to grow in your yard. They require no fertilizer\, no pesticides\, and less water than non-native species\, all while attracting and supporting Indiana’s wildlife. Aaron’s expertise in native plants and Indiana habitats will be a great resource for anyone interested in transforming their outdoor space into a wildlife oasis.

SUMMARY:Caves and Caving in Indiana
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dean Wiseman is a professor of biology at the University of Indianapolis with multidisciplinary expertise in physiology\, cell biology\, pathophysiology and pharmacology. He is also an avid caver and will be sharing his knowledge of caving with us this December. Dean has vast caving experience beyond Indiana such as 5 expeditions to Lechuguilla\, multiple visits to Mammoth Cave\, and his ongoing participation in ground-breaking surveys of Vietnam’s Tiger Cave System. However\, he is also a very avid caver within the state as a former director and active member of the Central Indiana Grotto—our local chapter of the National Speleological Society. This talk will be a great opportunity for those curious about caving in Indiana and ways to get involved in the local speleological scene.
