SUMMARY:Nocturnal Migrants
DESCRIPTION:Each fall\, hundreds of species of songbirds make the perilous journey from their Canadian breeding grounds\, to the jungles of South America. Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalist\, Aidan Rominger\, on September 29th\, 2023 where he will go through how to properly ID many of these migrating songbird species at night\, by listening to flight calls given by each species. We will also go into depth on how to best view these migrating songbirds under the stars! \nThe first half of the class will be inside in the classroom\, and the second half\, we will go out and listen for any migrating songbirds\, as well as see if we can view them flying past the moon. FREE with park admission\, but registration is required here: https://anc.apm.activecommunities.com/indyparks/activity/search/detail/25606?onlineSiteId=0&from_original_cui=true

SUMMARY:Waterfowl ID Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to identify all species of waterfowl (ducks\, geese and swans) that have been reported in the state of Indiana. We will be looking at ID by plumage as well as by behavior. Once we finish the presentation we will practice our newfound ID skills out on the Eagle Creek reservoir\, either in the viewing room or by taking a short walk. \n Then if you are able you can join us on the 22nd for a field trip to Goose Pond FWA to put all your new ID skills to the full test. If anyone wants to carpool\, we will be meeting at 7 am the Wal-Mart on County Line Rd. and Emerson in Greenwood\, up front by the grocery entrance. Otherwise\, feel free to meet us in the Goose Pond FWA Visitor Center Parking Lot at 9 AM. We will be birding until 1 pm or until we feel like we’ve covered enough\, whichever comes first.

SUMMARY:Coyotes with Gerrian Albers\, Indiana Department of Natural Resources
DESCRIPTION:Coyotes illicit a range of emotions in people. They are native to Indiana and have an interesting history in the state\, but their populations were very low for a long time\, giving many the perception we didn’t have coyotes for many decades. Coyotes are adept at living in all types of habitats\, including urban areas\, and this has allowed them to thrive in Indiana. Join Indiana’s furbearer biologist as she talks about all things coyote.

SUMMARY:Climate Watch
DESCRIPTION:Grab your binoculars—Birds need your help! \nWhat’s even better than watching birds? Knowing you’ve done something meaningful to protect them. \nJoin Climate Watch\, and you’ll be doing both! \n  \nAs the impacts of climate change continue to unfold\, nearly two-thirds of all North American bird \nspecies could struggle to adapt. When you participate in Audubon’s newest community science project\, \nyou’ll give Audubon scientists vital data on how birds are faring now—which guides our most effective \nconservation work to help them adapt. \n  \nJoin the winter survey at Strawtown Koteewi Park on Saturday\, January 27th at 9am. We will meet at the Taylor Center of Natural History (12308 Strawtown Ave\, Noblesville\, 46060) and divide up survey locations around the park. Get ready to count the bluebirds\, nuthatches\, goldfinches\, towhees\, or Painted Buntings you see. And know that you’re an important part of protecting birds and the places they need. \nContact Chandler Bryant\, Amos Butler Audubon Society Board Member and local Climate Watch Coordinator\, to RSVP to this survey event or for more information on Climate Watch with Amos Butler Audubon Society. \nYou can also register by clicking HERE \nChandler Bryant – Chandlersbryant@gmail.com \n  \nSource: National Audubon Society’s Climate Watch webpage: https://www.audubon.org/news/coordinator-resources-climate-watch

SUMMARY:Woodcock Walk – Daubenspeck Community Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:Join DCNP Board member Brian Cunningham for an evening walk at Daubenspeck Community Nature Park (DCNP)\, a great spot to view displaying American Woodcocks. \nWoodcocks have a very acrobatic mating display that they perform at dusk known as the sky dance. The main trail of Daubenspeck is mowed\, but the ground can be somewhat uneven. \nRegistration is not required. This event is free and open to the public. \nPhoto courtesy of Amy Hodson.

This south-central Indiana refuge is a flat to gently rolling mix of bottomland and upland forest\, wetland\, brushland and grassland habitat. The refuge has been designated as a Continentally Important Bird Area. It is a great place to observe a vast number of Indiana’s year-round and migratory water bird species as well as a large variety of spring warblers that will be migrating through in late April. \nFor those wanting to carpool\, meet at the Walmart at County Line Road and Emerson Avenue in Greenwood at 7:00 am. Please indicate that you want to carpool when you register. Specific details about where to meet in the parking lot will be sent to attendees prior to the outing. For those wishing to drive directly to the refuge\, meet at the visitor’s center at 8:00 am. \nThe field trip is free but limited to 10 participants and registration is required. ABAS members only can register before April 6\, 2024\, after which time\, if there are any spots open\, anyone may register. To register email Chuck Anderson at chucka1999@aol.com.

SUMMARY:Climate Watch: Grab Your Binoculars—Birds Need Your Help!
DESCRIPTION:Grab Your binoculars—Birds Need Your help! \nWhat’s even better than watching birds? Knowing you’ve done something meaningful to protect them. Join Climate Watch\, and you’ll be doing both! As the impacts of climate change continue to unfold\, nearly two- thirds of all North American bird species could struggle to adapt. When you participate in Audubon’s newest community science project\, you’ll give Audubon scientists vital data on how birds are faring now—which guides our most effective conservation work to help them adapt. \nJoin the summer survey team on Saturday\, June 8 from 8:30 am to11:30 am. Our official meeting location is the River Road Park in Carmel\, IN.  We will split up the specific survey locations depending on the number of participants. The more participants we have\, the more survey area we can monitor! \nGet ready to count the bluebirds\, nuthatches\, goldfinches\, towhees\, or Painted Buntings you see. And know that\nyou’re an important part of protecting birds and the places they need. \nRSVP or send any questions to Audrey Cooper\, ABAS Board Member and Conservation\nChair. For more information on Climate Watch\, contact Chandler Bryant\, ABAS Board Member and Climate Watch\nChapter Coordinator. \nAudrey Cooper – audreyacooper@gmail.com\nChandler Bryant – Chandlersbryant@gmail.com \nSource: National Audubon Society’s Climate Watch webpage \nCoordinator Resources for Climate Watch | Audubon
