SUMMARY:Why Bird Feeding Makes a Difference
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS Board Director Brian Cunningham for an informative program about feeding the birds. \nAnyone who has ever fed wild birds knows that it can bring joy to their lives. But\, does bird feeding just benefit people? Do the birds become dependent on the food we provide? We’ll take a look at what we have learned from various scientific studies and citizen science data on why feeding wild birds makes a difference for the health and well-being of people and for our backyard feathered visitors. \nBrian Cunningham has a love for the outdoors\, nature\, and birds. His greatest passion is helping others experience nature and opening their eyes to the wonder and beauty of birds. Brian has worked at Wild Birds Unlimited for 22 years and is their Product and Hobby Education Manager. \nBrian has a BS in Forestry with an emphasis in Forest Recreation from Purdue University.

SUMMARY:Sodalis Nature Park Warbler Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs at Sodalis Nature Park in Hendricks County in search of migrating warblers and other Spring arrivals! \nIn 2011\, a collaborative effort among Hendricks County Parks & Recreation\, the Indianapolis Airport Authority and the US Fish & Wildlife Service established Sodalis Nature Park in southeastern Hendricks County. This 210-acre tract lies within 2200 acres of land acquired by the Airport Authority for the purpose of wetland conservation and habitat protection for the endangered Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis)\, after which the park is named. \nOnce opened to the public\, Sodalis quickly became known as one of the most productive birding hotspots in Hendricks County. 158 species have been recorded there according to eBird records\, including 34 warbler species\, 12 sparrow species\, and all the vireo\, swallow and woodpecker species expected in Indiana. In addition to migrants\, we will also target some of the species that breed in the park. One of the park’s specialties is Prairie Warbler. Territorial males can usually be seen and heard along the Oak Trace trail. If we are lucky\, we may also discover whether or not the Mississippi Kites that nested in the park the last two years have returned. \nSodalis Nature Park is located at 7700 South County Road 975 East\, Plainfield IN 46168. Participants will meet in the parking lot at 7:30 am. The hike is expected to take two and a half hours. Trails through the park are a mix of gravel and dirt and are normally an easy walk\, but interior trails can become very muddy after even moderate rain\, making access problematic. Appropriate footwear is recommended along with insect repellent. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged\, but not required. Register by contacting Scott at (317) 850-4801\, or at msenochs@comcast.net.

SUMMARY:Newfields Bird Hike
DESCRIPTION:ABAS is excited to partner with The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields for bird hikes on this beautiful property along the White River and Central Canal. The hikes will be led by ABAS President Rob Ripma. \nMeet at Lake Terrace in the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres. There is free parking at the loop just ¼ mile west of the 38th Street entrance to Newfields. The loop parking is closer to the hike start and the address given for this event is approximate. You’ll need to be heading west on 38th Street to enter the loop parking area. Take the White River Pkwy East exit. Once in the parking area\, walk north through the entrance down a very short trail to Lake Terrace. Alternatively\, you can park in the main Newfield parking lots and walk down to the starting point. \nThe hike is free and open to the public. Registration is requested by emailing us at info@amosbutleraudubon.org. \nJoin us as we explore the nesting species of this wonderful property. \n  \nAbout Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres\nOn\, no surprise\, one hundred acres along the west side of Newfields\, just east of White River\, you’ll find Fairbanks Park. Explore woodlands\, wetlands\, meadows\, and the shoreline of a 35-acre lake. It’s one of the largest museum art parks in the country\, and unlike most\, continues to commission temporary\, site-responsive artworks. \nAs a former farm and later gravel quarry\, Fairbanks Park has a history of disturbance that has resulted in a mix of early successional woodlands\, some mature woodlands\, wetlands\, and a lake. This habitat diversity has created a property with the ability to host niche species of several different habitat types. Newfields strives to maintain that habitat diversity by invasive species removal and planting of Indiana native plant species in all areas of the Park. \nRecent additions include a nesting platform built to attract birds of prey\, a wild grass labyrinth\, and a variety of bird feeding and viewing stations.

SUMMARY:Kankakee Sands Sparrow Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Mark Welter as he leads you on a trip to Kankakee Sands in search of breeding sparrows. Kankakee Sands is a birder’s paradise for nesting prairie species. The 7\,000+ acres are actively being restored to a natural prairie habitat under the protection of The Nature Conservancy. Targets for the trip will include Song\, Field\, Vesper\, Henslow’s\, Grasshopper\, and Lark Sparrows. We will seek out additional species known to nest at Kankakee Sands such as Orchard Oriole and Blue Grosbeak. \nWe will meet at 6:00 am at the Dick’s Sporting Goods located at 6030 West 86th Street in Indianapolis and carpool to Kankakee Sands. Since the majority of this trip will be done birding by car\, walking will be minimal\, and we will likely stay close to the roads. Participants can expect to return to Indy around 3:00 pm. Contact Mark at shooter2_indy@yahoo.com if you have any questions. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is not required but appreciated.
