Our target sparrows will be Song\, Field\, Swamp\, Lincoln’s\, Vesper\, White-throated\, White-crowned\, Nelson’s\, and LeConte’s. Participants will have their choice on which day to attend\, but space will be limited to 10 people each date\, and each participant may only attend one of the dates. There are two dates – Saturday and Sunday. \nWe will meet in the southwest corner of the Trader’s Point Dick’s Sporting Goods\, located at 6030 West 86th St and carpool. The parking is limited at our destination. We will be walking through tall weeds and grass and through muddy areas\, so please dress accordingly. Terrain will be uneven as well as there are no trails. We will spend approximately two hours in the field\, longer if desired. This is a free event\, but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED by contacting Scott at (317) 850-4801. DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS Education Chair\, Jessica Helmbold\, for a workshop on wetland birds at Muscatatuck NWR. It will be a half day workshop ending with  lunch at the visitor center around 1:00 pm. If you’d like to stay for lunch\, please bring a brown bag or cooler lunch. \nMeet at the visitor center at 9:30 am. Alternatively\, if you’d like to carpool\, meet at 8:00 am in the Wal-Mart parking lot located at 1133 North Emerson Ave in Greenwood. Go to the side of the parking lot near the right side entrance. \nPlease remember to dress for the weather\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring any hats\, bug spray\, and sunscreen you need. Jessica presents the history of coffee\, and how to select and brew the best coffees. Working at Indy Park’s Garfield Park Conservatory gives her a chance to show visitors coffee trees and teach visitors about conservation. Clearing land for the production of staple crops such as bananas\, pineapples\, and coffee is one of the biggest threats to our rainforests. Coffee can grow in harmony with the rainforest\, if we demand it. We can vote with our dollars to support conservation through the kind of coffee we buy. Learn how the small choices we make can make a difference. We will also sample different varieties of Rainforest Alliance coffees. Join us!

DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs as he leads you to Greene County in search of migrating and wintering raptors. Goose Pond\, and surrounding areas in Greene County\, have become a prime wintering area and migratory stop-over for raptors such as Northern Harrier\, Rough-legged Hawk\, Merlin\, Golden Eagle\, and Short-eared Owl. The event will take place on Saturday\, December 8\, 2018. Meet at the Kroger located at 1930 East Main Street in Plainfield at 10:00 am and carpool to Goose Pond. We plan to stop for lunch at the McDonald’s in Linton before we begin searching Greene County for birds. \nWe will spend the afternoon and evening trying to find as many birds of prey as possible. We will remain in the area through sunset in hopes of seeing Short-eared Owls emerge from their daytime roost. Participants can expect to spend a lot of time driving in their vehicles until we find a raptor to study. \nThe event is free and open to the public. Historically\, this was not always the case. In this program\, Danielle will discuss how the Whooping Crane made its amazing comeback from fewer than 20 individuals in the 1940s to over 800 today. Learn about the creative methods used to bring Whooping Cranes back to the eastern United States\, the ongoing challenges associated with this effort\, and what the ICF is doing to help these cranes right here in Indiana. \n\n\nDanielle graduated from Indiana University with a B.S. in Biology before earning her M.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Science from Penn State. \n\n\nIn 2018 ABAS supplied a grant to the ICF to help promote Whooping Crane Awareness in Indiana. DESCRIPTION:Join Marian University for an early spring night hike to learn about beavers\, owls\, and other native Indiana wildlife active in the spring! \nCome out to the Nina Mason Pulliam EcoLab to enjoy an evening hike looking for frogs\, owls\, and to see the handiwork of the resident beaver colony. We’ll start with a hike at dusk\, looking and listening for the elaborate aerial displays and calls of the woodcock that reside in the EcoLab\, do some owl calling\, and look for other signs of early spring wildlife activity. We’ll learn about beaver adaptations and the role of beavers in wetlands\, and will learn some really cool facts about owls too. \nAll ages welcome and encouraged! Bring flashlight\, binoculars\, and dress appropriately for the weather since we will be outside. Parking is available near the Allison Mansion and in the Marian Hall lot across from Allison Mansion. \nWe will meet at the St. Francis statue on the west side of the mansion\, and then head down to the EcoLab shortly after. SUMMARY:Why Bird Feeding Makes a Difference
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS Board Director Brian Cunningham for an informative program about feeding the birds. \nAnyone who has ever fed wild birds knows that it can bring joy to their lives. But\, does bird feeding just benefit people? Do the birds become dependent on the food we provide? We’ll take a look at what we have learned from various scientific studies and citizen science data on why feeding wild birds makes a difference for the health and well-being of people and for our backyard feathered visitors. \nBrian Cunningham has a love for the outdoors\, nature\, and birds. His greatest passion is helping others experience nature and opening their eyes to the wonder and beauty of birds. Brian has worked at Wild Birds Unlimited for 22 years and is their Product and Hobby Education Manager. \nBrian has a BS in Forestry with an emphasis in Forest Recreation from Purdue University.

DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Enochs\, warbler identification enthusiast and Field Trip Chair for ABAS\, for a crash course in warbler identification. We will start in the Ornithology Center classroom and then head outside\, weather permitting\, to look for migrating warblers in Eagle Creek Park. \nThis event is free with park admission. Drop-ins are welcome. If you have binoculars\, please bring them. SUMMARY:Smith’s Longspur Field Trip – Lye Creek Prairie Burn
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS on a trip to the Lye Creek Prairie Burn (aka “The Burn”) and surrounding areas in search of migrating Smith’s Longspurs. The Burn is located in Montgomery County and is the most reliable place for viewing Smith’s Longspurs in Indiana\, as the property is managed specifically for them. We will meet at 8:00 am at the old Marsh parking lot\, located at 6965 West 38th Street in Indianapolis\, and carpool to The Burn. While in the area\, we will also seek out any raptors\, waterfowl\, and shorebirds that may be present. Participants can expect to return to Indianapolis around 1:00 pm.
