SUMMARY:Fall Birding at Goose Pond: FULL
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS and experienced hike leader Richard Garrett for an afternoon field trip to Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area in search of late/fall sparrows\, waterfowl\, cranes\, and raptors. On past trips we have been able to see Whooping Cranes along with numerous Sandhill Cranes. Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawks often frequent the area. A variety of ducks and geese should be there as well.  \n  \nThe last part of the evening will be spent in Bear Run Mines awaiting the appearance of the Short-eared Owls just before dusk. Viewing the owls is magical and you won’t want to miss it. No matter how many times you view these wonderful birds\, it never gets old.  \n  \nThe hike will take place on Sunday\, November 16\, 2025 from 1:00-6:00 pm. Participants will meet at the Goose Pond Visitor’s Center parking lot at 1:00 pm. Much of the field trip will be by car with multiple stops to get out and view birds. Be sure to bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Many of the birds may be viewed at a distance.  \n  \nThis field trip is currently full. ABAS members will have priority until November 1. Acknowledgements for signing up will be sent out after October 17. To get on the wait list\, email Laurie Voss at laurievoss25@gmail.com. This is a popular field trip so we expect registration to fill up early. Non-members should sign up early as after November 1\, it will be first come first serve.  \n  \nWhat: Field Trip to Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area \nWhen: Sunday\, November 16\, 2025 from 1:00-6:00 pm \nWhere: Meet at Goose Pond Visitors Center \nRegister: laurievoss25@gmail.com \n  \nPhoto: Jeremiah Oden

Bird-lovers between the ages of 20 and 40 are invited to attend a bird-nerdy game night on the evening of Wednesday\, November 12 at the Holliday Park Nature Center. SUMMARY:Bird Safe Indy Downtown Walkabout
DESCRIPTION:Join Wes Homoya for a downtown bird strike walkabout on the morning of Friday\, October 24. The meeting place will be the corner of Market Street and Alabama Street at the northeast side of the City-County Building. This walk will last approximately 1.5 hours (1-2 miles of walking) and will highlight both “problem” buildings and the most offensive windows/areas of individual buildings with regard to bird strikes. Attendees will also be shown buildings\, building designs\, and window solutions which minimize bird strikes.  \nThis is a unique opportunity to understand all facets of window-strike bird morbidity/mortality in a more visceral way than just seeing or reading about the problem. The program is limited to 15 participants and prior registration is preferred. Indicate interest in attending by contacting Deb Patrick\, Bird Safe Indy Chair\, at puriudeb@yahoo.com or message Wes Homoya via his Facebook page.

SUMMARY:Lye Creek Prairie Burn Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join hike leader Nick Kiehl for a field trip to the Lye Creek Prairie Burn\, aka “The Burn”\, in search of fall sparrows\, migrant waterfowl and possibly shorebirds.  For those of you who don’t know Nick\, here is a little background on him.  \n  \nNick began birding at age 7. Before he could drive his parents took him to all the hot spots in Indianapolis and as a teen\, he was a member of the Young Birders group along with Aidan Rominger and Jonathan Bontrager\, two other outstanding birders. He has birded all over Indiana and in several foreign countries. He enjoys leading hikes and I think everyone will enjoy Nick and appreciate his expertise.  \n  \nThe participants will meet at the Burn at 8:30 am. The terrain is flat and there are mowed trails\, although the ground can be uneven in some areas. Hiking shoes will help with the terrain. Please note that there are no restroom facilities on the property.  \n  \nThe field trip is limited to 12 people and registration is required. Priority registration is available to ABAS members until September 17 but non-members should sign up early\, as once registration is open\, it will be first come first serve. When you sign up please indicate whether you are a member or not and your phone number. The phone number is in case of cancelation if the weather is too severe. To register\, email Laurie Voss at laurievoss25@gmail.com. Registration and any communication after September 24 should go to Val Chambon at valeriejchambon@gmail.com.  \n  \nThe Burn is on County Road 650 N in Montgomery County near Crawfordsville. To get there from I74 take the US 231 exit and go north just under 3 miles to County Road 550 N. Take a right on County Road 550 N for just over a mile to County Road 150 E. SUMMARY:Lina Rifai: Saw-Whet Owls
DESCRIPTION:Lina Rifai is an Associate Professor of Vertebrate Biology at the School of Sciences at Indiana University Kokomo. Join Lina Rifai for a presentation about the ongoing research on Northern Saw-whet Owls at Eagle Creek Park. She has joined John Schaust in 2023 to band these small fall and winter visitors at the park. In the fall of 2024\, ten Northern Saw-whet Owls were outfitted with transmitters for the first time in the area to find out more about their roosting habitats and movements within an urban park. Lina Rifai will discuss the initial results of this study and discuss the importance of this type of study for conservation as well as habitat management implications.

SUMMARY:September Lake Watch Experience Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS and field trip leader Bill Sharkey for a Saturday at Lake Michigan to look for fall migrants. This is an opportunity for anyone curious or interested in how to do a lake watch\, to learn from one of the state’s most experienced lake watchers.  \nFor those curious what a lake watch is\, it is an opportunity to witness the southern movement of passerines\, shorebirds\, gulls\, waterfowl\, and if lucky\, witness the power and aerial maneuvering of a Jaeger.  \nThere are three possible Jaegers that have been viewed from a lake watch on Lake Michigan—Long-tailed\, Parasitic\, and Pomarine Jaeger. In September\, our best chances would be to see a Long-tailed Jaeger but a Parasitic is also a possibility. Pomarine Jaegers are seen in late fall\, if at all.  \nThis field trip will take place on Saturday\, September 6 beginning a half hour before dawn and run until 10:00 am Central Time. Participants are welcome to stay longer if desired. Meet at Marquette Park on the sand dune behind the concession stand. A scope is necessary for this field trip as many of the birds will be far out into the lake. Parking is along the side of the road that parallels the lakefront. Getting there early is helpful/essential. \nBe sure to bring sunscreen\, water\, food\, and possibly a folding chair. Plan for the weather and expect the air temperature to be 10 degrees cooler than inland.  \nThere is a maximum of 8 people who can register for this trip. ABAS members will have priority until July 31\, but don’t hesitate to sign up if you are interested as non-members are first come\, first serve. If you wish to come up on Friday\, there are hotels in Porter\, Chesterton\, and Michigan City. ABAS will cancel for severe weather so check communications.  \n  \nRegistration: Email Laurie Voss\, Field Trip Chair at laurievoss25@gmail.com \nWhen registering\, please provide your phone number in case we need to text in the last minute with changes.

SUMMARY:Proposed Name Changes to Birds
DESCRIPTION:John “Barny” Dunning is a Professor of Wildlife Ecology in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue. Join Barny as he presents a program about the upcoming proposed name changes for birds. The American Ornithological Society has proposed changing the common names of all birds that were named after specific people. This has been proposed as an action to make birding more welcoming and open to all people\, but has been criticized by many people. Barny will go over the reasoning why professional ornithologists have decided to take this step\, and give pros and cons on whether it should be done.
