SUMMARY:Dawn to Dusk: Two Young Birders' Take on a Big Day
DESCRIPTION:Last spring\, five young birders took on a grueling 24-hour competition known as a Big Day. Hyped up on Red Bull and various forms of carbohydrates\, the group logged 151 species despite birding on April 30\, an early date during migration. Although it poured most of the day\, these young birders were still able to find birds such as Chuck-will’s-widow\, Black-bellied Whistling-Duck\, Wilson’s Phalarope\, and Barn Owl. Join Matthias Benko and Ceth Williams at Holliday Park for an account of their day\, from midnight to midnight.

SUMMARY:Sodalis Nature Park Warbler Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join Mark Welter at Sodalis Nature Park in Hendricks County in search of migrating warblers and other Spring arrivals! \nIn 2011\, a collaborative effort among Hendricks County Parks & Recreation\, the Indianapolis Airport Authority and the US Fish & Wildlife Service established Sodalis Nature Park in southeastern Hendricks County. This 210-acre tract lies within 2200 acres of land acquired by the Airport Authority for the purpose of wetland conservation and habitat protection for the endangered Indiana Bat (Myotis sodalis)\, after which the park is named. \nOnce opened to the public\, Sodalis quickly became known as one of the most productive birding hotspots in Hendricks County. 158 species have been recorded there according to eBird records\, including 34 warbler species\, 12 sparrow species\, and all the vireo\, swallow and woodpecker species expected in Indiana. In addition to migrants\, we will also target some of the species that breed in the park. One of the park’s specialties is Prairie Warbler. Territorial males can usually be seen and heard along the Oak Trace trail. If we are lucky\, we may also discover whether the Mississippi Kites that nested in the park last year have returned. \nSodalis Nature Park is located at 7700 S. Co. Rd. 975E\, Plainfield IN 46168. Participants will meet in the parking lot at 8:30am; trip is expected to take 2-3 hours. Trails through the park are a mix of gravel and dirt and are normally an easy walk\, but interior trails can become very muddy after even moderate rain\, making access problematic. Appropriate footwear is recommended.

SUMMARY:ABAS Goose Pond FWA Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join Mark Welter for a trip to Goose Pond FWA in search of waterfowl. Located in Greene County just south of the town of Linton\, Goose Pond’s 8000+ acres represent Indiana’s largest and most successful habitat restoration project. Since its completion in 2008\, Goose Pond has been a magnet for migrating waterfowl\, waders\, shorebirds\, and songbirds. Mid-March can be expected to produce an interesting mix of lingering winter birds and early Spring arrivals. \nOur primary focus will be on dabbling and diving ducks. Additionally\, geese\, cranes\, American White Pelicans\, and shorebird species may be possible. We will primarily bird from the roads and parking areas and may take brief hikes along the levees if the situation warrants. Good water-resistant boots are advisable for this trip. Due to the distances that can be involved in surveying this property\, bring a spotting scope if you have one on hand. However\, scopes will be available to share. \nIf time allows and there is interest\, we may also visit the Beehunter Marsh units adjacent to Goose Pond as well as the Dugger Unit of the Greene-Sullivan State Forest\, located a few miles to the northwest. We will meet at 7 a.m. in the Target parking lot at 10209 E. US 36 (Rockville Road) in Avon\, just west of the Ronald Reagan Parkway. Participants should bring snacks and drinks if desired\, as we will not be going into town\nfor lunch. We can expect to be back around 3 p.m. Contact Mark at mwelter521@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Bubbly Birder Big Year
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, Amy Hodson set out on an Indiana Big Year with the goal of seeing 300 species of birds in the state\, and to catalog her adventures along the way via the “Bubbly Birder” Facebook page.  By the end of the year\, Amy was the first female in Indiana to log 300 species of birds in a single year. \n\nWhat bird could be found by wading through waist-high flood water from the Wabash River?\nWhat FIRST state record was found at a feeder a mere 10 minutes from home?\nWhat did her first EVER lake watch trip to Lake Michigan provide?\nWhat birds should she have gotten but didn’t? And why?\nWhat were the 10 lifers she picked up along the way?\n\nJoin Amy during this program as she shares stories from a whirlwind of a year that got her to 302 species as well as the highlights\, the misses\, and the stories in between. This program will be conversational\, so bring your questions and we will see you there!

SUMMARY:The Road to 1000!
DESCRIPTION:By today’s birding standards\, a goal of seeing 1000 species of birds seems somewhat trivial. But to some people\, it’s a big goal!  With a family of 5 children\, a full-time salaried job\, and all of the full-time tasks that go along with it\, getting to the goal has been no easy task.  Join speaker Chad Williams as he takes you on a brief journey through some of his travels in the U.S.\, Mexico\, Central America\, and South America. \nChad Williams has been actively birding since 2007 and has been interested in birds since the 5th grade.  He loves nature and loves to promote the enthusiasm of birds and nature to others.  He is the adult Chair of the Indiana Young Birders Club and is currently on the board of the Amos Butler Audubon Society.  In addition to birding\, Chad grows and sells Carnivorous Plants and Orchids.  He is married to Carrie and has 5 children and 2 granddaughters.
