Trails wind their way around the beautiful old growth woods and along the\ncreek.\nThe park is bordered on the north by 75th Street and on the west by College Ave. There is a\nsmall parking area off of College Ave north of 73rd Street. If that area is full\, there may be\nadditional parking in the neighborhood south of the park. You will meet your leaders at the\nCollege Ave shelter.\nTo sign up\, please email Laurie Voss at: laurievoss25@gmail.com at least five days before the\nscheduled hike. Please include your phone number in case of last-minute changes. SUMMARY:Ritchey Woods Spring Migration Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Olivia Bautch\, Editorial Chair for ABAS\, is taking us back to Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve for a morning searching for migratory birds and summer breeders. This Fishers preserve boasts multiple quality habitats ranging from old-growth forest to swamp to prairie\, making it a natural stopping place and breeding ground for sensitive species. \n  \nThis field trip is limited to 10 participants and registration is required. Priority registration is available to ABAS members until April 1\, but non-members should sign up early\, as once registration is open\, it is first come first serve. \n  \nWe will meet near the picnic tables and cabin at the trailhead\, and several pairs of binoculars will be available for those who need them. Trail surfaces include rough gravel\, boardwalks\, and dirt paths with roots/rocks. While gravel trails in grassland and swamp portions only have one incline\, there is greater variation in terrain in the forest habitat. Our route will vary in length based on the species encountered. \n  \nWhen you sign up\, please indicate if you are a member or not and include your phone number. The phone number is in case of needing to cancel due to weather. To register\, email Laurie Voss at laurievoss25@gmail.com.  \n  \nWhat: Ritchey Woods Spring Field Trip \nWhen: Saturday\, May 16\, 2026 from 8:00-10:00 am \nWhere: Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve. 10410 Hague Rd\, Fishers\, IN 46038 \nRegister: laurievoss25@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Hardy Kern\, Pesticides\, Policy\, and Protecting Birds
DESCRIPTION:Policies that reduce pesticide use are powerful tools for safeguarding birds and the ecosystems they depend on. At American Bird Conservancy\, the Pesticides and Birds Campaign focuses on finding legislative and regulatory solutions for the millions of birds lost to pesticides every year. This talk from ABC’s Director of Government Relations\, Hardy Kern\, will explore how smarter laws\, science-based reforms\, and on-the-ground practices can curb harmful chemicals\, protect biodiversity\, and create healthier landscapes for both wildlife and people.

SUMMARY:Global Big Day at Prophetstown SP with Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving
DESCRIPTION:The best way to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day\, also known as Global Big Day\, is counting birds (—for science) with your peeps. And since it is peak spring migration\, your trusty TBT leader Olivia Bautch is taking you out of the region to meet up with outstanding Tippecanoe County birder\, Vivek Govind Kumar\, who will lead this field trip at Prophetstown State Park. \n  \nProphetstown SP is home to interpretive history\, camping\, and aquatics\, but we’re here for the sprawling grasslands\, wetlands\, and young forest tracts that draw both exciting migrants and vulnerable breeding birds. Blue Grosbeak\, Dickcissel\, Sedge Wren\, Yellow-breasted Chat\, Northern Bobwhite\, Yellow-billed Cuckoo\, and Ring-necked Pheasant are just some of the special species across stops at this park. \n  \nSeveral pairs of binoculars will be available for those who need them. We may caravan between stops. Trail surfaces include wide paved trails (find access information here) and crushed gravel paths along the grassland\, and narrow dirt trails with many inclines/declines in the forest/wetland. Our route and stops will vary based on day-of bird productivity\, and more information will be emailed to participants closer to the event. We will do our best to ensure any special needs are met\, so do not hesitate to ask about accommodations! \n  \nThe Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving group is designed for bird-lovers age 20-40\, as a space to observe birds with new friends from the Central Indiana community. To register\, email Olivia Bautch at falcon_515@outlook.com\, stating if you are a ABAS member or not. \nThis program is limited to 12 participants and is free\, but there is a gate fee per vehicle for the state park. To lower the fee for everyone\, we will meet at the shops off I-65 in West Lafayette at 7:50am and carpool about 10 minutes into the park. Please bring $2 to contribute to the gate fee for your car.\n\nPre-registration is required. ABAS members get priority registration until April 25\, but non-members should sign up early\, as once registration is open\, it is first come first serve.\n  \nWhat: Global Big Day at Prophetstown SP with Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving \nWhen: Saturday\, May 9\, 2026 from 8:00-10:00 am \nWhere: Prophetstown State Park. 5545 Swisher Road\, West Lafayette\, IN 47906 \nRegister: falcon_515@outlook.com

SUMMARY:Carpenter Nature Preserve Field Trip (ABAS Exclusive Entrance)
DESCRIPTION:Join outstanding birder and hike leader\, Jonathan Bontrager\, for a pre-grand opening opportunity to explore the Carpenter Nature Preserve in Zionsville\, IN. The preserve\, which was formerly Wolf Run Golf Course\, is a 215-acre area that has been a project between the mayor of Zionsville\, Jim and Nancy Carpenter of Wild Birds Unlimited\, and the Zionsville Parks and Recreation Department. It is designed to be a sanctuary for wildlife that includes enhanced wetlands\, woodlands\, and prairies. Eagle Creek runs along the eastern portion of the park and should be a nice riparian habitat. \n  \nAmos Butler Audubon Society has been given special permission to visit the park before it opens up\, so we are asked to stay in areas that they deem safe. However\, it is close to completion so many of the trails and boardwalks should be completed. \n  \nThe hike is on Saturday\, May 2 and will run from 8:00 am to 11:00 am. The address for the park is 601 S. 900 East\, Zionsville\, IN 46077. There should be a Park Monument sign to direct you to the entrance and drive back to the parking lot where we will meet.  \n  \n  \nThere is a 10 participant limit so sign up early. To sign up\, please email laurievoss25@gmail.com and please include your phone number and whether or not you are a member.  ABAS members will have priority before April 15. Non-members will be added first come first serve after April 15\, but sign up early to get on the list.  \n  \nWhat: Pre-opening hike at the new Carpenter Nature Preserve \nWhen: May 2\, 2026 from 8:00-11:00 am \nWhere: Carpenter Nature Preserve. 601 S. 900 East\, Zionsville\, IN 46077 \nRegister: laurievoss25@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Woods and Woodcock Wander with Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving
DESCRIPTION:In birding\, March is a weird time. You’ve got winter species lingering while spring species are moving in. Trails can be muddy and lakes can be frozen. But one species is just the right kind of weird to shine in this season. \n  \nOur March Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving outing is both a woodcock walk\, and an observation of the species’ quirks. We’ll meet at Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve in Fishers at 6:30pm for some spring birding with a species checklist (that might include a few species that aren’t birds) in the wooded and wetland habitats.  \n  \nWe will then head to the Observation Deck in the grassland to wait for the Woodcocks to perform their courtship “sky dance”. Depending on where activity is\, we may wander to other trails along the grassland portion of the preserve for best viewing. \n  \nWe will meet near the picnic tables and cabin at the trailhead\, and several pairs of binoculars will be available for those who need them. Trail surfaces include rough gravel\, boardwalks\, and few dirt paths with roots/rocks. While gravel trails in grassland and swamp portions only have one incline\, there is greater variation in terrain in the forest habitat. We will traverse up to .75 miles at a slow pace with stopping to observe birds. There is opportunity to sit at the Observation Deck. This program is limited to 20 participants and is free\, but pre-registration is required. ABAS members get priority registration until March 10\, but non-members should sign up early\, as once registration is open\, it is first come first serve. \n  \nWhat: Spring Woods and Woodcock Wander with Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving \nWhen: Friday\, March 20\, 2026 from 6:30-8:30 pm \nWhere: Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve \nRegister: falcon_515@outlook.com

SUMMARY:FULL - Waterfowl and Owl Caravan with Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving
DESCRIPTION:Hey TBT peeps\, did you know Indy has its very own *reliable* Short-eared Owl hotspot? ABAS wants to take you out to see these magical birds of prey\, as well as some weird ducks\, geese\, and swans on our next sunset field trip.  \nTo accommodate for the owls and your work schedules\, our program is scheduled for Saturday\, January 24 from 4:00-6:00 pm. Participants will meet at the parking lot for Geist Coffee Company (just in case you’d like to stop for coffee\, but please arrive early if your plan to do so). From there we will carpool to Geist Waterfront Park and/or the lot across the Olio Rd Bridge\, depending on waterfowl activity. This end of the reservoir is usually good for large\, mixed flocks. \nAt about the halfway point\, we will carpool to Mt Comfort Airport in McCordsville to wait out the owls and whatever else shows up during this time. Likely winter species include Horned Lark\, Northern Harrier\, sparrows\, and waterfowl gathering to roost. There is a possibility for Lapland Longspur\, Snow Bunting\, and Rough Legged Hawk. \nAt both stops we will do our best to allow for car-birding as well as birding outside. However\, as there are limited spots that will provide a view from inside the cars\, please let me know if you have a condition that cannot tolerate cold\, wind\, or long periods of standing\, so that we can allow those in most need a car spot to enjoy the experience.  \nPlease bring scopes and binoculars as distances will vary at each spot\, and dress for the weather (including hand/toe warmers). We should arrive back at Geist Coffee at 6pm\, which will be after dark. \nThis field trip is free but slots are filled. To get on waitlist\, email Olivia Bautch at falcon_515@outlook.com. As a reminder\, the Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving program is designed to bring 20–40-year-olds together to find their peeps in-person and share their love of birds.

SUMMARY:Fall Birding at Goose Pond: FULL
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS and experienced hike leader Richard Garrett for an afternoon field trip to Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area in search of late/fall sparrows\, waterfowl\, cranes\, and raptors. On past trips we have been able to see Whooping Cranes along with numerous Sandhill Cranes. Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawks often frequent the area. A variety of ducks and geese should be there as well.  \n  \nThe last part of the evening will be spent in Bear Run Mines awaiting the appearance of the Short-eared Owls just before dusk. Viewing the owls is magical and you won’t want to miss it. No matter how many times you view these wonderful birds\, it never gets old.  \n  \nThe hike will take place on Sunday\, November 16\, 2025 from 1:00-6:00 pm. Participants will meet at the Goose Pond Visitor’s Center parking lot at 1:00 pm. Much of the field trip will be by car with multiple stops to get out and view birds. Be sure to bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have one. Many of the birds may be viewed at a distance.  \n  \nThis field trip is currently full. ABAS members will have priority until November 1. Acknowledgements for signing up will be sent out after October 17. To get on the wait list\, email Laurie Voss at laurievoss25@gmail.com. This is a popular field trip so we expect registration to fill up early. Non-members should sign up early as after November 1\, it will be first come first serve.  \n  \nWhat: Field Trip to Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Area \nWhen: Sunday\, November 16\, 2025 from 1:00-6:00 pm \nWhere: Meet at Goose Pond Visitors Center \nRegister: laurievoss25@gmail.com \n  \nPhoto: Jeremiah Oden

SUMMARY:Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving – Wingspan Game Night
DESCRIPTION:And we’re back with another Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving event! Bird-lovers between the ages of 20 and 40 are invited to attend a bird-nerdy game night on the evening of Wednesday\, November 12 at the Holliday Park Nature Center. The evening is meant to be highly casual\, not too serious\, and spontaneous conversation is encouraged. \n  \nFor player and location capacity we’re limiting this event to 24 participants and prior registration is required. To register\, email Olivia Bautch at falcon_515@outlook.com with your name\, how many guests you are registering for\, and which game you are bringing if any. \n  \nWhat: Thirty\, Birdy & Thriving – Wingspan Game Night \nWhen: Wednesday\, November 12\, 2025 from 6:30-8:00 pm \nWhere: Holliday Park Nature Center \nRegister: falcon_515@outlook.com

SUMMARY:Bird Safe Indy Downtown Walkabout
DESCRIPTION:Join Wes Homoya for a downtown bird strike walkabout on the morning of Friday\, October 24. The meeting place will be the corner of Market Street and Alabama Street at the northeast side of the City-County Building. This walk will last approximately 1.5 hours (1-2 miles of walking) and will highlight both “problem” buildings and the most offensive windows/areas of individual buildings with regard to bird strikes. Attendees will also be shown buildings\, building designs\, and window solutions which minimize bird strikes.  \nThis is a unique opportunity to understand all facets of window-strike bird morbidity/mortality in a more visceral way than just seeing or reading about the problem. The program is limited to 15 participants and prior registration is preferred. Indicate interest in attending by contacting Deb Patrick\, Bird Safe Indy Chair\, at puriudeb@yahoo.com or message Wes Homoya via his Facebook page.
