SUMMARY:September Lake Watch Experience Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Join ABAS and field trip leader Bill Sharkey for a Saturday at Lake Michigan to look for fall migrants. This is an opportunity for anyone curious or interested in how to do a lake watch\, to learn from one of the state’s most experienced lake watchers.  \nFor those curious what a lake watch is\, it is an opportunity to witness the southern movement of passerines\, shorebirds\, gulls\, waterfowl\, and if lucky\, witness the power and aerial maneuvering of a Jaeger.  \nThere are three possible Jaegers that have been viewed from a lake watch on Lake Michigan—Long-tailed\, Parasitic\, and Pomarine Jaeger. In September\, our best chances would be to see a Long-tailed Jaeger but a Parasitic is also a possibility. Pomarine Jaegers are seen in late fall\, if at all.  \nThis field trip will take place on Saturday\, September 6 beginning a half hour before dawn and run until 10:00 am Central Time. Participants are welcome to stay longer if desired. Meet at Marquette Park on the sand dune behind the concession stand. A scope is necessary for this field trip as many of the birds will be far out into the lake. Parking is along the side of the road that parallels the lakefront. Getting there early is helpful/essential. \nBe sure to bring sunscreen\, water\, food\, and possibly a folding chair. Plan for the weather and expect the air temperature to be 10 degrees cooler than inland.  \nThere is a maximum of 8 people who can register for this trip. ABAS members will have priority until July 31\, but don’t hesitate to sign up if you are interested as non-members are first come\, first serve. If you wish to come up on Friday\, there are hotels in Porter\, Chesterton\, and Michigan City. ABAS will cancel for severe weather so check communications.  \n  \nRegistration: Email Laurie Voss\, Field Trip Chair at laurievoss25@gmail.com \nWhen registering\, please provide your phone number in case we need to text in the last minute with changes.

SUMMARY:Lina Rifai: Saw-Whet Owls
DESCRIPTION:Lina Rifai is an Associate Professor of Vertebrate Biology at the School of Sciences at Indiana University Kokomo. Join Lina Rifai for a presentation about the ongoing research on Northern Saw-whet Owls at Eagle Creek Park. She has joined John Schaust in 2023 to band these small fall and winter visitors at the park. In the fall of 2024\, ten Northern Saw-whet Owls were outfitted with transmitters for the first time in the area to find out more about their roosting habitats and movements within an urban park. Lina Rifai will discuss the initial results of this study and discuss the importance of this type of study for conservation as well as habitat management implications.
