SUMMARY:Gardening for Birds: Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 8\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Ornithology Center (OC) to learn how to prepare native plant seeds in the fall for germination over the winter\, to support wildlife\, especially birds! Join for a brief presentation followed by a garden tour\, then practice separating pre-collected seeds & build two germination containers\, one for the center and one for you to take home! Containers created by participants for the OC will be planted in the wildlife gardens in the spring. Participants can take home a seed container of their own as well to observe the final stages of germination and to plant at their own homes! \nAll materials will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring a clean plastic container (think plastic milk jug\, gallon or half or 2L soda bottle) to utilize in the workshop. Preregistration is required\, $15/participant. This program is geared towards adults with an interest in gardening with native plants\, youth ages 12+ are welcome to register with their adult guardian. Each fall\, hundreds of species of songbirds make the perilous journey from their Canadian breeding grounds\, to the jungles of South America. Join Eagle Creek Ornithology Center naturalist\, Aidan Rominger\, on Wednesday\, September 18th\, from 7:00-8:30 pm where he will go through how to properly ID many of these migrating songbird species at night\, by listening to flight calls given by each species. He will also go into depth on how to best view these migrating songbirds under the stars! The first half of the class will be inside in the classroom\, and the second half will be held in the field to listen for any migrating songbirds\, as well as see if we can view them flying past the moon using a scope and binoculars. SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Walk
DESCRIPTION:Forest Bathing\, also known as Forest Therapy\, is a nature-based wellness practice. This experience can be described as a sensory\, immersive\, and slow walk. During a walk\, we will use our senses to “bathe” in our surroundings\, using eyes\, ears\, hands\, nose\, body\, and heart to experience the world around us. This practice will be facilitated by Certified Association of Nature & Forest Therapy (ANFT) Guide & Ornithology Center Assistant Manager\, Donna Riner. During the walk\, your guide will facilitate invitations\, or prompts\, to support sensory connection to nature and provide opportunities for sharing between invitations. We will spend approximately two hours together\, with time built in for walking short distances\, wandering\, exploring\, sitting\, and sharing. Unlike a guided hike\, this walk is short\, covering only a half mile or so. When you participate in Audubon’s newest community science project\, you’ll give Audubon scientists vital data on how birds are faring now—which guides our most effective conservation work to help them adapt. \nJoin the summer survey team on Saturday\, June 8 from 8:30 am to11:30 am. SUMMARY:Hamilton County May Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer to help Hamilton County Parks and Recreation and the Indiana Audubon Society as we count birds throughout our county. This annual count takes place on International Migratory Bird Day and the results are a valuable tool in tracking bird populations throughout the United States. Bird watchers of different skill levels will be paired together and assigned to various areas of the county. After the morning festivities\, an optional lunch will be provided in the Cool Creek Nature Center. \nThis event is free though Pre-registration is required. \nRegister by calling 317-774-2500 or emailing amanda.smith@hamiltoncounty.in.gov
