Spring Migration Survey at the Indianapolis Monarch Sanctuary and the Lilly ARBOR
Dates: Saturday, March 28 at 7:30am; Wednesday, April 22 at 7am (Earth Day); Saturday, May 30 at 6:30am
~1.5 hour time commitment. 1-3 volunteers/date requested.
Lilly ARBOR, an 8-acre experimental research forest, and the Indianapolis Monarch Sanctuary are both located downtown by the White River. Request from Dr. Victoria Schmalhofer of CEES IU-Indianapolis. Dates are tentative.
Global Migratory Bird Survey at Eagle Creek Park.
Date: Saturday May 9, 2026
Time TBD.
~2-3 hour time commitment. Up to 6 volunteers needed.
Lead IU Indy students on bird surveys. Request by Dr. Victoria Schmalhofer, past recipient of 2024 Birdathon Grant for bird window strikes on IUPUI campus. In 2025, 40 students signed up to take part but Dr. V could only take 10. More leaders needed so more students can participate with smaller groups.
Marion County residents, Bird Safe Indy needs YOU
Date: ongoing
One time contact or monthly contact, 1-30 minute time/contact commitment. No limit on volunteers needed.
Bird Safe Indy needs YOU to contact via e-mail, phone call, or in-person your Marion County Indianapolis City-County Councilmember! Express your interest in bird-safe window legislation with hope that the Environmental and Sustainability Committee will take the lead on this critical initiative.
Bird Safe Indy “Account Managers” for Area Buildings
Date: ongoing
~2 hours per month (open-ended, request a minimum 6-month commitment). Up to 12 volunteers needed.
Top 10 Downtown Indy offending bird-strike buildings and Top five ABAS-area new building projects. Initiate (or continue) contact with Building Manager, provide information/educational resources on window-strikes, data on most offensive windows, and possible solutions. Develop and maintain relationships with one to three Building Managers. Volunteer can pick building(s) to “manage” and possibly mix one existing building and one new project. Need is critical for this core BSI responsibility!
Migration Lights Out Program –Disseminate Mayoral Proclamation and Education
Date: Ongoing need
Negotiable time commitment and no limit to volunteers needed.
Disseminate Mayoral Proclamation and lights-out education to encourage buildings (possibly neighborhoods) to turn off lights during both Spring and Fall migration. Spring migration 3/15 – 5/30; Fall migration 8/15 – 10/15. Contact Building Manager and/or tenants, HOA, individual businesses, local government, post on social media, and so on. Large leeway for volunteers as far as time allotment and as to how and where information is disseminated.
ABAS Event Tabling
Dates: TBD
3 hour time commitment, no limit to volunteers needed.
ABAS would like to increase our visibility and community presence with increased tabling in 2026 for membership recruitment, educational dispersal, increased participation in our events, and to elicit
support for our initiatives! Currently contacting Winter Markets to ascertain if we could table at least once in their season.
