Seven Different Ways to Go Birding in Boone County

Boone County should be at the top of any list of best birding destinations in central Indiana because it has a lot to offer in terms of woodland and grassland birds, including the unusual "grasspiper" shorebirds. The challenge of finding specific families of birds is one of the reasons I enjoy Boone County so much. However, I may be biased toward this type of birding. While I've spent most of the last five years exploring Zionsville for my five-mile radius list, I've always made time to venture to the county's outskirts to see what's out there — and so should you.

Indy 500 Balloon Release Canceled!

On April 20th, 2022, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) announced it would be suspending the balloon release indefinitely. For the past 2 years, IMS has not done the balloon release due to COVID and reduced guest capacity. In 2020, a coalition of environmental organizations across Indiana, including ABAS, reached out to IMS to see if we could support environmental sustainability initiatives at the track. The balloon release tradition was a low-hanging fruit that the coalition desperately wanted to end.

Volunteers Needed for Climate Watch

Birders of all skill levels can participate in National Audubon Society's Climate Watch program. From May 15 to June 15 you can help gather information on specific species that will be accumulated and used by scientists to see how climate is affecting the birds. It's a small commitment and the benefits to the birds could be significant.

Laurie Voss Joins ABAS Board

We are pleased to announce the addition of Laurie Voss to the Board of Directors. Laurie will be the Recording Secretary and serve on the Executive Committee. Laurie's knowledge of birds, experience in the local birding community, and administrative skills are a welcome addition. Laurie fills an opening from Joanna Scott. Joanna just left the Board as she moves on with her life. Most of you will remember her as Joanna Woodruff. With her new husband, they will be starting a family in the next few months. We all wish Joanna the best in her new roles. We also want to thank Joanna for her almost six years of service on the Board and as our Recording Secretary.

DNR Okays Birdfeeding in all Counties of Indiana

Residents throughout Indiana may again put out their feeders if they are comfortable doing so and are not observing sick or dead birds in their yards. DNR strongly encourages residents who do so to clean seed and suet feeders at least once every two weeks by scrubbing feeders with soap and water, followed by a short soak in a 10% bleach solution.

CILTI Events on the ABAS Calendar

We are pleased to begin including the Central Indiana Land Trust (CILTI) events on our calendar. These are volunteer days and hikes in the central Indiana region. CILTI has long been a partner of ABAS in helping us fulfill our stewardship mission for the birds. We have contributed well over $100,000 to various land conservation projects. There are four volunteer days coming up and they'd love some help clearing invasive species. These are two hours in length so they're easy to do. We also have two hikes listed. Mossy Point in Parke County is a beautiful nature preserve in the Sugar Creek valley. If you haven't been there, this is a place not to miss. And being the Friday after Thanksgiving, it's a perfect way to walk off some of that Thanksgiving turkey! The other hike will concentrate on trees at Meltzer's Woods near Shelbyville. It's another beautiful nature preserve.
