The Townsend’s Solitaire, a bird of the western mountains, migrates during the winter in search of juniper berries. Indiana is lucky if one of these rare visitors is found around the lakefront during the winter months. This November, not one but two Townsend’s Solitaires have been reported in the state. One bird was found up north in the Ogden Dunes Pinery, and today one was reported in southern Indiana. The bird found today by John Castrale at Springmill State Park in Lawrence County is one of the most southern reports of this species in the state.
